Baseball goes 2-1 in early part of Spring Break trip

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Ursinus Baseball team opened the 2010 season on this past weekend with three games on their spring break trip.

Late Saturday night, the Bears defeated La Roche 9-4, while defeating La Roche 12-8 in 10 innings on Sunday morning.

Sunday afternoon, the Bears lost to Penn State-Behrend, 11-5 to fall to 2-1 on the young season.

In the Saturday night win, Furlong got the win in relief of senior starting pitcher Corey Weaver (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove). Sophomore Rich Guthridge (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) picked up the save.

Junior infielder Danny Ludwig (Boonton, N.J./Mountain Lakes) went 2-for-4 in the win, with two RBI.

In Sunday morning’s game, sophomore pitcher Steve Christakos (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) went seven strong innings but did not get the decision. Freshman Joe Mascali (Sag Harbor, N.J./Pierson) had the win, while freshman pitcher Kyle Levocz (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) picked up the save. Sophomore Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) was 1-for-2, while senior Brett Umstead (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), senior Mike Schwager (Bechtelsville, Pa./Boyertown) and senior Tommy Clarke (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon) each went 2-for-5.

In the PSU-Behrend game, sophomore pitcher Sean Grimes (Villanova, Pa./Radnor) took the loss in relief of freshman starting pitcher A.J. Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South). Junior Rob Vogt (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Hill School) went 3-for-4 while Guthridge was 2-for-3.
