Benner to Represent U.S. at Masters World Cup

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Just a few months after taking the Ursinus College field hockey team on a tour of Ireland, head coach Janelle Benner is headed back to Europe – this time representing the United States.

Benner was selected to coach the Over-55 team at the Exin Masters World Cup to be held July 27-August 5 in Terrassa, Spain. The biennial tournament is being held at the Club Egara in, with more than 140 national teams expected to compete in age categories from Over-35 to Over-55. Team USA is sending five U.S. Women's Masters National Teams in the O-35, O-40, O-45, O-50 and O-55 age divisions.

Selection for the Masters World Cup was extremely competitive, with six trials held on both the East and West Coasts. Performance at the trials was evaluated, with an alternative video, interview and reference assessment available for those unable to attend any of the trials. Extended squads were named last September and four additional practices were held in December and January before naming the final team rosters.

The U.S. O-55 squad will begin pool play against Wales on July 28, followed by contests against Scotland, Australia, and New Zealand.

In addition to this prestigious honor, Benner will also be accompanied by Ashley Johnston, her longtime assistant at Ursinus who will serve as a team manager and assistant for the O-55 team in Spain.
