Bears go 5-0 at North/South Duals
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Ursinus had a very successful afternoon at
the North-South Duals as the host Bears won all five matches.
The Bears started the day with a 36-12 win over Morrisville State,
while following that up with a 31-10 win over Coast Guard.
In their third match, Ursinus took a 24-16 decision over York
(Pa.), followed by a 21-15 win over Central (Iowa).
In the final match of the day, Ursinus (5-0) defeated the United
States Military Academy Prep School 37-9.
In the Morrisville match, the Bears dropped the opening match
before winning the next three bouts. Sophomore Alex Blank
(Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) won a major decision at 133
by a 9-0 score, then senior Dan Glover (Bergenfield,
N.J./Bergenfield) had a technical fall 22-4 at 141
pounds.
At 149, sophomore Connor McCormick (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J.
Roberts) won his bout by fall in 3:00. After Morrisville
took the bout at 157, Ursinus won the next four weight classes.
Senior Harris Papas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavier) won
his match at 165 via a fall at 5:27, followed by a 6-5 decision
going to freshman Myles Tornetta (Frazer, Pa./Great
Valley) at 174.
At 184, junior Nate Murren (Littlestown,
Pa./Littlestown) picked up a pin in 5:30, followed by a
pin from sophomore Connor McNamara (Winchester,
Mass./Winchester) at 197.
In the Coast Guard match, Ursinus won the first four matches.
Freshman Connor Gregory (Winchester,
Mass./Winchester) won his match by forfeit, then Blank
picked up a 6-2 decision at 133. Glover improved to 2-0 on the day
with a 13-3 major decision, followed by an 11-3 major decision from
McCormick hat 149.
Coast Guard took the next three bouts, until Murren won his bout at
184 via a 14-3 major decision. McNamara won his second match of the
day at 197 via a major decision. Junior Ed Minelli (Hull,
Mass./Xavierian Brothers) won his bout at 285 by
forfeit.
In the York match, Blank moved to 3-0 on the day with a 7-5
decision at 133, followed by a 5-2 win by Glover at 141. McCormick
went up to 3-0 on the day with a pin at 149 in 4:09. Junior
John Whitham (Abington, Pa./La Salle) won his
match at 157 via fall in 3:16.
Tornetta and McNamara each won by decision for Ursinus against the
Spartans.
Against Central, Blank, Glover, McCormick and Whitham were all
victorious. Blank got a pin at 4:21, followed by a 7-6 decision win
from Glover. McCormick took a 7-5 decision at 149, followed by a
8-3 decision at 157 from Whitham.
Murren won his bout at 184 via an 8-2 decision to go 4-0, followed
by a 6-0 win by McNamara at 197.
Finally, against the United States Military Academy Prep School,
Gregory started the bout with a pin in 55 seconds. Blank then won
by forfeit, followed by an 11-3 major decision win by Glover. At
165, Papas picked up a 7-3 decision win, then Tornetta won at 174
by pin. At 184, Murren won by forfeit, as did McNamara at 197.
