Two For The Road

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Ursinus College wrestling team closed out its Centennial dual slate on Saturday, picking up a pair of wins over Johns Hopkins and Gettysburg.

In the first match, the Bears (who are ranked 23rd) defeated Johns Hopkins 27-9, while the Bears blanked host Gettysburg in the second match of the day 49-0.

In the Hopkins match, Ursinus fell behind early at 125 as Paul Bewak defeated senior Chris Donaldson by a 2-1 score. Ursinus would win the next four bouts, starting with junior Keven Hoogheem picking up a 9-3 win over Christian Vallis at 133. Junior Christian Hoogheem then defeated Connor Joyce at 141 by a 10-0 score for a 7-3 lead.

At 149, sophomore Derek Arnold defeated Tommy Grifa by technical fall as the match ended 4:52 in by a 15-0 score. Senior Richard Jasinski then defeated Christian Salera at 157 by a 6-1 score for a 15-3 lead.

At 165, Welles Sakmar beat junior Gnobela Seri by slim 5-4 score, before Jared Forman defeated freshman Cody Richmond at 174 by a 5-2 score to get Johns Hopkins back to within six at 15-9.

Ursinus then won the last three matches of the bout, starting with senior Daniel Manganaro's win at 184 over Evan Johnson 2-1, followed by freshman Paul Aaroe at 197 over Kory Johnson at 6-1. Sophomore Matan Peleg then finished the dual with a pin of Ellis Flannery in 2:12.

Against Gettysburg, freshman Austin Petril won the opening match at 125 by forfeit, with Keven Hoogheem winning at 133 over Matt Laux, 10-3. Christian Hoogheem scored a win over Jake Bracken at 141 by a 11-4 score, followed by Arnold defeating Quinn Merrigan 9-4 for a 15-0 lead.

At 157, Jasinski pinned Brandon Carcuffe in 1:32 for a 21-0 lead, with Seri scoring a 14-5 major decision over Pat Thomas, giving the Bears a 25-0 lead.

After Richmond won by forfeit, Manganaro made quick work of Camden Stoops, pinning him in 1:31.

Aaroe got a forfeit at 197, followed by Peleg defeating Joey Bragg by pin in 1:50.

Ursinus will head to McDaniel on Saturday for the Centennial Conference Championships.
