Swimming Teams Rout Albright in Final Non-Conference Dual

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's and women's swimming teams hosted Albright College in a dual on Saturday, claiming a pair of victories by scores of 131-72 (women) and 130-73 (men) in the Bears' last non-conference meet of the season.

Both teams claimed three of the top five finishes in the 200-yard medley relay. The grouping of sophomore Clara Baker, freshman Grace Emig, junior Sydney Gundersen, and sophomore Peyten Lyons placed first in the women's event, clocking in a 1:52.31. Senior William Benn, sophomore Devin Nielsen, junior Colin McNamara, and sophomore Travis Venables captured victory in in the men's event at 1:39.14.

The opening relay was one of three victories on the day for Venables, who later finished first in the 50 free (22.25) and 100 free (50.08), where he was .12 seconds abreast of sophomore Daniel Becker.

Freshman Haley Sturla led sophomore Katherine Longenecker and freshman Margrethe Leis in a 1-2-3 finish in the 1650 free, Sturla posting a winning time of 18:41.33. Freshman Daniel Powell dominated the men's event with a time of 16:56.76.

Freshman Jacob Menzer claimed an individual win in the 200 free, where his clocking of 1:45.61 was succeeded by fellow rookie Casey Lear (1:47.11) and senior Marcus Wagner (1:47.61). Wagner touched the wall first in the 500 free (4:53.70), with Lear in second there as well.

Junior Olivia Tierney and sophomore Gabriella Timuscuk placed back-to back in both the 200 IM and 100 breast. Tierney finished the former in 2:18.52 and the latter in a time of 1:10.25.

Baker later placed first in the 100 fly at 58.64, just ahead of teammate Katherine Porter. McNamara won the event for the men in 53.41, just over a quarter-second faster than Albright's Sean Riddle.

Lyons won the 100 back in a time of 1:00.75. In the same event, Benn and Menzer finished first and second for the men, with Benn taking first in 55.30 seconds.

Sophomore Caroline Powell and senior Allison Emick were the first two to touch in the 500 free, Powell claiming the top spot at 5:30.16.

Both teams will return to the pool next Saturday, January 21, as they host Centennial Conference rival Franklin & Marshall. The dual meet is scheduled to commence at 1:00 p.m.
