Shoremen Slip Men's Swimming in Final Event

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – A measly 0.16 seconds separated the Ursinus College men's swimming team from victory at Washington College on Saturday, as the Shoremen took first place in the final event of the afternoon to post a dramatic 133-129 Centennial Conference triumph.

Senior William Benn and freshman Jacob Menzer combined for all four of the individual victories for the Bears (5-3, 3-3) in their final conference dual meet of the season. Benn took first place in both the 100 back (54.75) and the 200 back (1:58.96), where Menzer was runner-up. Menzer touched the wall first in the 200 free (1:45.10) and 200 IM (2:00.07). Benn's winning time in the 100 back was 1.74 seconds ahead of the Shoremen's second-place swimmer.

Senior Marcus Wagner was second in both the 500 free (4:53.15) and 1000 free (10:03.63).

Sophomore Travis Venables placed second in the 50 free (22.21), with freshman Jared Krawetz taking third in 22.72. Freshman Casey Lear was runner-up in the 100 free (48.28), finishing only .05 ticks off the pace set by Washington College's Kevin Mackenzie. The rookie was third in the 200 free.

Junior Colin McNamara finished second in the 200 fly, clocking a 2:00.82 to land just .12 seconds behind Tyler Cummings. Sophomore James Callaghan placed third in both the 200 fly and 200 IM, and McNamara was third in the 100 fly (54.10).

Sophomore Maxwell Coulter took second in the 200 breast (2:19.35), where classmate Devin Nielsen was third, and Coulter placed third in the 100 breast (1:02.20).

The Bears went into the 200 free relay with a 123-122 lead, meaning to the winner would go the spoils. Unfortunately, Washington College's top quartet edged Benn, senior Dylan Cooper, Lear, and Venables by .16 seconds to hand the home side its first CC win of the season.

The men's swimming team heads to Lancaster for the F&M Pre-Championship Invitational on Saturday, February 11.
