LANCASTER, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's swimming team hit the road and cruised past Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, winning 173-89.
Leading the charge for the Bears were junior Peyten Lyons, who collected four first-place finishes. Freshman Sophie May and senior Sydney Gundersen each added three first-place places for the Bears.
Lyons and May kicked off the afternoon, contributing in the Bears' win in the 200 medley relay, where they were joined by senior Olivia Tierney and junior Clara Baker, finishing in 1:50.11. They teamed up again to close out the meet, winning the 400 free relay (3:43.80) with Gundersen and Baker. Lyons grabbed her other two victories in the 200 free – where she touched in 2:00.17 – and the 100 free – in which she clocked in a time of 55.35.
May nabbed her third first-place finish of the day, winning the 100 back in 1:00.96, where she was followed by freshman Katherine Kurzinsky, who finished third (1:01.93). She'd add a second-place finish in the 100 free (56.76), touching just after Lyons.
Along with the 400 free relay, Gundersen also touched first in the 50 free (25.22) and 500 free (5:18.66), while grabbing a second-place finish in the foursome that took second in the 200 medley relay. Junior Caroline Powell, senior Meggie Leitz and Kurzinsky joined Gundersen, finishing in 1:53.80.
Kurzinsky and Powell each would add another second-place finish to their day, as Kurzinsky was part of the Bears' group to take second in the 400 free relay in 3:47.37. Freshman Allison Thomas, senior Katherine Porter and junior Katherine Madden, joined her in the relay. Powell also nabbed second in the 200 IM (2:17.90), where Leitz touched just after her in 2:17.96. Leitz would finish her day with a second-place finish in the 200 back (2:13.75), touching just before Kurzinsky (2:16.54). Thomas would add a second-place finish in the 500 free (5:24.34).
Tierney and Baker each recorded a pair of victories on the day. Tierney kicked things off in the 200 medley relay before grabbing a solo win in the 100 breast, clocking in at 1:09.49. Freshman Katelyn Moore finished third in the race (1:12.14). Moore would add a second-place finish in the 200 breast (2:36.76) and finished third in the 100 breast (1:12.14) as well.
Baker joined Tierney in the 200 medley relay and got her other first-place finish in the 400 free relay.
Porter notched a first-place finish in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 1:00.37, just before junior Gabriella Timuscuk (1:01.18). Timuscuk rounded out Bears to leave with a first-place finish, grabbing hers in the 200 fly (2:13.26), where she finished just ahead of Baker (2:14.61).
Sophomore Margrethe Leis took second in the 1000 free with a time of 11:19.97, edging out Baker, who grabbed second in 11:22.39.
Powell rounded out her day with a third-place finish in the 200 breast (2:37.82) while sophomore Haley Sturla and junior Kathryn Longenecker each grabbed a third-place finish before hitting the buses. Sturla got hers in the 200 free (1:32.34), while Longenecker notched hers in the 1000 free (11:22.39).
The Bears are back in Collegeville next Saturday to swim against Washington College.
