Men's Swimming Takes Down Shoremen

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Ursinus College men's swimming team earned a 152-103 decision over Washington College.

Ursinus (6-2, 4-2) won 9 of the 14 events on the day. The duo of junior Jacob Menzer and sophomore Mikey Prior continued to swim with confidence in individual and relay events for the Bears, posting wins and more solid times in the pool. A variety of the Bears' swimmers chipped in with winning performances.

Menzer set the third fastest time in the conference of 9:50.80 in a victorious 1000 freestyle. Menzer (48.48), freshmen Daniel Mueser (49.22) and Casey Lear (49.33) swept the podium in the 100 freestyle.

Prior, the reigning Centennial Conference men's swimmer of the week, won the 100 backstroke with a mark of 52.49 seconds and the 200 variety (1:54.17). Prior missed his season bests in the 100 backstroke by nine hundredths of a second and in the 200 by less than two tenths.

Ursinus took the top two spots in the 400 medley relay to open things. Prior, senior Maxwell Coulter, Mueser and junior Jared Krawetz were the winning relay members as they came in with a time of 3:34.88.

Krawetz, Lear and senior Daniel Becker went 1-2-3 in a close finish of mere seconds between the three for the Bears in the 200 freestyle. Krawetz won with a time of 1:48.29. Becker's time was 1:49.32 and Lear's mark was 1:50.76.

Senior James Callaghan and senior Johnathan Myers went first and second in the 200 butterfly. Callaghan (2:00.75) edged out Myers by a second.

Ursinus earned first and second in the 50 freestyle. Freshman Ryan Carkhuff got the victory and senior Travis Venables came in second. Carkhuff had a time of 21.74, just beating out his teammate Venables by a half of a tick (22.21).

The 100 butterfly went to Mueser with a time of 52.36.

The Bears tune-up for the Centennial Conference Championship with the Franklin & Marshall Pre-Championship Invite on Feb. 16 at 11 a.m.
