CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Ursinus College women's swimming team collected nine event victories in route to a 136-121 victory over Washington College on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, the Bears improved to 6-3 on the season and 3-3 in conference action, meanwhile the Shorewomen fell to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in Centennial Conference play.
Ursinus opened with a first place finish the 200-yard medley relay as the quartet of
Alexandra Zelinske,
Abigail Ferguson,
Molly Stevens, and
Melissa Leonard finished with a time of 1:53.45. Sophomore
Katie Barlow followed up with a first-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle as she finished nearly 15 seconds ahead of Washington's Lauren Paules with a time of 10:59.62. Classmate
Emily Carkhuff took third place in the 1000 free with a time of 11:18.68 and also tallied a third-place finish in the 100 breast with a time of 1:20.29.
The Bears carried the momentum into the next three races as juniors
Melissa Leonard,
Alexandra Zelinske, and senior
Abigail Ferguson won three straight races. Leonard tallied the best time in the 200-yard freestyle finishing at 1:56.28, while Zelinske won the 100-yard backstroke touching the wall at 1:02.31. Leonard earned her second first-place finish with the best time in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.73, while Zelinske recorded the fastest time in the 200-yard backstroke touching the wall at 2:12.95.
Sophomore
Molly Stevens finished just behind Zelinske for a second-place finish with a time of 1:02.69, while first-year
Sara Bozzomo earned a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:02.97. Ferguson recorded a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.66, while fellow senior
Charlotte Driver took home a second-place finish in the 200 fly as she finished with a time of 2:19.38.
Barlow continued her impressive afternoon with the top-time in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:34.40, while teammate
Charlotte Driver took home second place touching the wall at 2:46.33. Bozzomo (3
rd, 5:32.33) and Carkhuff (4
th, 5:34.09) earned top-times in the 500-yard freestyle with Ferguson finishing second in the 100 butterfly (1:02.08) and earning the top-time in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:15.06.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday as they host Dickinson College and will recognize their seniors prior to the meet.
