CHESTER, Pa. – Sophomore
David McCauley and senior
Stephen Lyons each recorded two event victories leading the Ursinus College men's swimming team to a 135-127 victory over Widener University on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory Ursinus improves to 4-1 on the season meanwhile the Pride fall 3-1 overall. McCauley earned victories in the 500 (10:09.25) and 1000-yard (4:55.30) freestyle events and took third place in the 50 free with a time of 22.81. Lyons collected first-place honors in the 50 (21.85) and 100-yard freestyle races and his time of 48.25 in the 100 free was just a second shy of his personal best this season.
The Bears opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-yard Medley relay as the quartet of
Francesco D'Avella,
Jake Hennegan,
Jack Giuliana, and Lyons posted a time of 1:38.18. Ursinus bounced back in the following race, the 1000-yard freestyle as McCauley and junior
Jonah Kasznay (10:20.46) combined for the top-two times in the event.
Junior
Dylan Schreffler posted a first-place time of 1:48.40 in the 200-yard freestyle which ranks 12
th this season within the Centennial Conference. Sophomore
Francesco D'Avella followed up with the top-time in the 100-yard backstroke (55.40), while senior
Alex Kessel placed fifth with a time of 1:01.20. D'Avella later added a second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:16.01.
During the next race, the 100-yard breaststroke, senior
Jake Hennegan (1:02.09) and junior
Kevin Sonn (1:03.57) combined to collect second and third-place honors, respectively. Ursinus carried in the momentum into the 50-yard freestyle, as the trio of Lyons (21.85), McCauley (22.81), and junior
Jan Perez-Bonilla (22.86) posted three of the top four times in the event.
Ursinus closed out the meet with the fastest time in the 400-yard freestyle relay as the team of McCauley, Schreffler, Giuliana, and Lyons combined for a time of 3:12.55, which ranks as a personal best this season for the team and ranks fourth within the conference.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday, November 11
th as they host McDaniel College for a Centennial Conference meet starting at 1 p.m.
