Day One Recap
SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior
Melissa Leonard led the way for the Ursinus College women's swimming team, winning two events as the Bears wrapped up their tri-meet with Salisbury University and No. 14 Swarthmore on Saturday.
Unfortunately, for the Bears they were defeated by Swarthmore 252-74 and edged by Salisbury 173-154. With the loss they now sit at 6-3 in dual meets and 4-2 within the Centennial Conference.
Highlighting the day was Leonard who won the 200 free behind a time of 1:54.50 and placed first in the 200 back touching the wall at 2:06.04. Also, during the 200-yard freestyle, first-years
Mimi Norris (1:59.58) and
Sara Bozzomo (2:00.32) collected sixth and seventh place finishes, respectively.
Opening the morning session, first-year
Morgan Valeriano recorded a fourth-place finish in the 400 IM (4:39.13), while classmate
Melanie Hahn took sixth with a time of 4:47.81. Valeriano also added a fifth-place nod in the 200-yard backstroke, which ranks as her personal best in the event.
Junior
Molly Stevens tallied a 11th place finish in the 100-yard butterfly touching the wall at 1:00.87, while first-year
Mia Tamburrino finished 15th (1:03.11). Stevens later added a 10
th place time I the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.04) with Tamburrino placing 11th in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:37.41).
During the 1650-yard freestyle, junior
Emily Carkhuff paced the Bears lineup with the third best time, touching the wall at 18:19.09. Later in the meet, the Bears recorded three of the top six times during the 100-yard freestyle. Led by a third-place finish and a personal best time from Bozzomo (53.17), Hahn (4
th, 54.37), and Norris (6
th, 55.04) rounded out the top-three times for the Bears.
First-year
Sylvi Lynch added a ninth-place finish during the 200-yard butterfly behind a time of 2:23.00. Ursinus closed out the meet with the second fastest time in the 400-yard freestyle relay as the quartet of Valeriano, Hahn, Bozzomo, and Leonard combined for a time of 3:33.79.
The Bears will have some time off before returning to action on Friday, January 19
th with a home dual meet against Cabrini University at 4 p.m.
