ORLANDO, Fla. – The Ursinus Men's Tennis team battled back to win a thrilling 5-4 match over Northwestern (Minn.) on Thursday morning as they continued their Florida Spring Break Trip.
With the win, the Bears improved to 7-0 for the first time since the 2015-16 season when they started by the same record. Meanwhile, the Eagles fell to 6-4 overall.
The Eagles took the opening advantage of the match by winning two of the first three doubles matches, two of which were forced into tiebreakers. Juniors
Lars Jespersen and
Will Oberholtzer suffered an 8-4 setback at No. 1 doubles to Davis Pfaff and Jack Geurkink in the lone doubles match not decided by tiebreaker. Senior
Noah Mandel and freshman
Andrei Bogdan were edged 8-7 (9-7) at No. 3 doubles by Griffen Jarchow and Darin Rupp before juniors
Ethan Yu and
Darby Rogers came through at the No. 2 spot with an 8-7 (7-5) victory over Stewart Morrell and Jacob Weddle.
Bogdan kept his unbeaten streak alive at singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Rupp at No. 6 singles and Rogers followed by taking down Geurkink 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. The Eagles, however, rallied with singles wins at No. 2 and No. 5 to gain the upper hand in the match at 4-3. Mandel dropped a tough three set match to Jarchow 0-6, 6-4, 8-10 while Oberholtzer suffered the same fate to Weddle 4-6, 6-3, 3-10. Yu followed by winning a three-set match of his own over Pfaff 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 to even the match at four to set the stage for No. 1 singles to decide the match. Jespersen needed three sets as well, but he got the job done by besting Morrell 4-6, 7-5, 10-2 to give the Bears the win.
Ursinus returns to action tomorrow to wrap up their Florida spring break trip against Otterbein at 3:00 p.m.
