COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Leading 125-120 heading into the final race, the Ursinus College men's swimming team earned the dual meet victory behind a first-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay over Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon.
Ursinus won each of the final four races to mount the comeback and defeat Stevens 138-124. The Bears honored four seniors prior to the meet as
Jake Hennegan,
Alex Kessel,
Daniel Leach, and
Stephen Lyons were recognized prior to the contest for their dedication and commitment to the Swimming program.
In the opening race, the quartet of sophomore
Francesco D'Avella, Hennegan, first-year
Jack Giuliana, and Lyons earned the fastest time in the 200-yard medley relay after touching the wall at 1:35.90.
Junior
Jonah Kasznay paced the Bears lineup by earning two first place nods in the 1000 free (9:47.20) and 200 IM (1:57.22), while taking second place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:59.24. Sophomore
David McCauley finished just behind Kasznay in the 1000 free with a time of 9:59.30 and later added the quickest time in the 500 free touching the wall at 4:50.80. During the 200 free, juniors
Jake Klucinec (1:46.96) and
Dylan Schreffler (1:47.81) added second and fourth place finishes, respectively.
In the fifth race, the 100-yard breaststroke, Ursinus added two of the top three times as D'Avella (1:00.25) placed second and Hennegan took third with a time of 1:00.52. The Bears carried the momentum into the 50-yard freestyle as Lyons swam the quickest time at 21.42, while junior
Kevin Sonn placed third with a time of 22.43. Lyons later added his second first-place finish of the day with a time of 47.62 in the 100-yard freestyle. He currently ranks second all-time in program history in the 100-yard freestyle after his time of 46.16 in 2022.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, D'Avella (2:16.54) and Hennegan (2:19.97) teamed up for second and third place finishes as first-year
Adam Denn placed fifth with a time of 2:25.43. Meanwhile in the 100-yard butterfly, Giuliana added a first-place nod with a time of 52.56, while Kessel added a six-place finish in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:14.14.
In the final event of the meet, the quartet of Lyons, Schreffler, Giuliana, and McCauley teamed up for the fastest time in the 400-yard freestyle relay resulting in a 138-124 victory for Ursinus.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, February 3
rd as they travel to Gettysburg College for their season finale before the Centennial Conference Championships on February 22
