A Late Surge Gives Men's Wrestling Comeback Victory over New England College

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – A major decision from sophomore Mohamed Abdelatty at 285lbs, sparked the Ursinus College men's wrestling team to a 21-20 dual meet victory over New England College on Saturday afternoon from the Floy Lewis Bakes Fieldhouse.

Ursinus faced a 14-4 deficit midway through the dual, but by winning four of the next five bouts the Bears recorded their first dual meet victory of the season. Trailing 20-18 heading into the final bout, Abdelatty secured the comeback victory for Ursinus with an 11-1 major decision at 285lbs over NEC's Brandon Lavasta.

The Pilgrims won each of the first two bouts by decision to earn an early 6-0 lead heading into the 141lb match. Sophomore Andrew Schaen halted the New England College run by collecting a 13-4 major decision over Caden Frost (NEC) at 141lbs to bring the Bears deficit to 6-4. Schaen totaled a pair of takedowns in the opening stanza, while collecting a total of four takedowns throughout the match enroute to the major decision.

Next, sophomore Max Parnis (149lbs) dropped a 13-5 decision versus the second ranked wrestler in region one New England's Bobur Berdiyorov to increase the Pilgrims lead to 10-4. Parnis trailed 4-1 entering the final period, but a trio of takedowns resulted in the major decision. At 157lbs, New England College earned their largest lead of the match at 14-4, as junior Gabriel Heaney fell by a 15-3 major decision against Rocco Hayden.

The momentum swung during the 165lb match as sophomore Nicolas Rehfuss recorded a 16-1 technical fall over NEC's Andrew Pierdrahita to bring the Bears deficit to 14-9. Rehfuss jumped out to an early 6-0 lead behind a takedown and three near-fall points via a cradle. After an escape, Rehfuss defended and scored a take down during a shot attempt from Pierdrahita to increase his advantage to 9-1. He added a pair of near fall chances enroute to the technical fall victory. At 174lbs, Ursinus cut their deficit to 14-12 as junior Anthony Cerulli tallied a 9-4 decision at 174lbs over Joseph Bolduc.

New England College recorded a victory by fall at 184lbs to increase their lead to 20-12, but Ursinus quickly answered with a much-needed pin at 197lbs to bring the Bears deficit to 20-18 with one match remaining. Senior Connor Fritsch (197lbs) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead as a single leg takedown and four near fall points gave him a quick advantage. Fritsch used a half before readjusting his positioning for the pin over NEC's Trevion Atallah at the 1:20 mark of the opening period to bring Ursinus within striking distance.

In the final match, Abdelatty gained the momentum early on as a takedown and three near fall points gave him a 6-0 advantage of the end of the first period. In the second stanza, Abdelatty defended a shot attempt from NEC's Levasta and collected a takedown enroute to a 11-1 major decision and 21-20 match victory for the Bears.
