Men's Wrestling Competes at Stevens Quad Meet

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Ursinus College men's wrestling team dropped a pair of dual meets against Stevens Institute of Technology and No. 8 Vermont State University Castleton on Saturday afternoon during a quad meet at Stevens University.
 

Ursinus opened with a 28-13 defeat versus the Ducks, before falling 48-0 against eighth-ranked Castleton and now sit at 1-2 overall this season in dual meet action.

Senior Franco Mazza opened the dual with a 12-4 major decision over Stevens' Naci Robinson to give Ursinus an early 4-0 advantage. Within the opening minute, Mazza attacked on a single leg and switched to a double leg for the opening takedown and a 3-0 advantage. After an escape from Robinson, Mazza used a cement mixer for his second takedown and increased his lead to 8-1 at the end of the first period with two near fall points. Mazza added a final takedown and recorded a riding time point to earn a 12-4 match victory.


Stevens responded with four consecutive victories including three by bonus points to gain a 16-4 match lead at the halfway point of the dual. At 133lbs, first-year Aiden Leypoldt dropped a decision by a 7-5 score against Steven's Vincent Principe. With Ursinus trailing by 12, sophomore Braden Kmak cut the Bears deficit in half by recording a fall over Jason Smith at 165lbs. Kmak opened with an early takedown after converting on a single leg, before using a near sided cradle for the pinfall at the 1:32-mark of the first period.

 
The Ducks responded with back-to-back close victories over the Bears to regain the momentum and increase their match led to 22-10 heading into the 197lb bout. First, junior Anthony Cerulli fell by an 8-6 decision at 174lbs, while sophomore Jake Gross lost in sudden victory by a 9-6 score at 184lbs. After a fall by the Ducks in the ensuing bout, first-year Samuel Rock III closed out the dual with a 7-1 victory over Maximo Ruiz at 285lbs resulting in the 28-13 dual score.

The Spartans jumped out to an early 6-0 lead as No. 4 ranked Gavin Bradley earned a first period fall over Mazza at 125lbs. After a technical fall for the Spartans at 133lbs, Castleton's 12th-ranked James Rodriguez collected a 7-0 decision over sophomore Andrew Schaen to extend the Spartans advantage to 14-0.


Castleton increased their lead to 22-0 over the next two bouts as senior Wesley Tosto (149lbs) lost by a 7-1 decision against 18th-ranked Nicolas Ballella, while Kmak fell by technical fall (18-0) versus 13th-ranked Nate Camiscioli at 157lbs. The Spartans recorded back-to-back falls over the next two bouts, while an 18-1 technical fall from the No. 1 ranked wrestler, Sampson Wilkins at 184lbs increased the Bears deficit to 39-0. Castleton closed out the meet with a major decision at 197lbs and a technical fall at 285lbs enroute to the 48-0 dual victory.
 
The Bears return to action on Friday, December 6th as they travel to York College for the New Standard Invitational starting at 10:00 a.m.
