FROSTBURG, MD. – The Ursinus College women's wrestling team led at the halfway point of the dual meet, but eventually fell 31-13 on Sunday afternoon against Division II Frostburg State University.
Sophomore
Mandy Gavares (103-110lbs) and first-year
Olivia Guy highlighted the Bears lineup by each earning victories by fall during the dual.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 5-0 lead behind a victory by forfeit at 101lbs from FSU's Faith Day. Ursinus quickly answered with back-to-back victories by fall to regain a 10-5 lead heading into the 124lb bout. Gavares bumped up to 110lbs and earned a first-period pin and improved her dual-meet record to a perfect 4-0. She recorded the opening takedown within the first minute of the match as Gavares used a sweep single before transitioning to a double leg for the early 2-0 lead. She extended her lead to four with a blast double, while her third takedown led to the fall at the 1:46-mark of the first period.
Next, at 117lbs, Guy increased the Bears lead to 10-5 with a fall at the 1:02-mark of the first stanza. She tallied consecutive takedowns, before using a half, and readjusting for the pin. With the victory, Guy opens her rookie campaign with a perfect 4-0 mark in dual meets and has collected a fall in three of her last four matches. Kalli Roskos dropped a 10-2 decision against 10th-ranked Jada Fowler, while sophomore
Stacy Bloomfield fell by a 6-2 score against Brianna Holcomb at 131lbs. The Bobcats earned victories by technical superiority at 138lbs and 145lbs to regain a 19-12 advantage with three matches to go.
Sophomore
Emma Matera dropped a 9-3 decision at 160lbs against Samira Stephens, while a pin, and victory by superiority for the Bobcats closed out the meet with Frostburg winning 31-13.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, December 7th as they travel to York College for the New Standard Invitational starting at 10 a.m.
