SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's swimming team earned a trio of event victories but fell against (RV) Swarthmore College, 231-67, during a home-and-home series versus the Garnet on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, junior
Francesco D'Avella and sophomore
Jack Giuliana each broke William Elliott Pool Records with their respective times and event victories in the 100-yard breaststroke and butterfly. D'Avella tallied a first-place nod in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.01, just shy of the previous record of 59.23. Meanwhile, Giuliana's top-time of 50.68 in the 100 butterfly bested the previous fastest time of 51.29.
Giuliana added a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly at Swarthmore on Saturday touching the wall at 1:58.00. Meanwhile, D'Avella placed third in the 200-yard IM on Friday with a time of 2:06.49. Senior
Jonah Kasznay impressed over the weekend recording four second place finishes throughout both days of competition. On Friday, he opened with the second fastest time in the 500-yard freestyle (4:43.30) and 400 IM (4:14.14). While at Swarthmore, he placed second in the 1650-yard freestyle (16:34.68) and 200 IM (1:59.35).
During the 50-yard freestyle, Ursinus collected two of the three fastest times as seniors
Kevin Sonn (21.25) and
Jan Perez-Bonilla (21.99) placed second and third, respectively. Each swimmer finished just shy of their career best as Sonn's fastest time occurred at the 2024 Centennial Conference Championships (21.08) and Perez-Bonilla best time came against Swarthmore in 2023 (21.92). Sonn added a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle time trial on Friday with a time of 47.32, while senior
Dylan Schreffler placed second touching the wall at 47.80.
The Bears took earned second place in the 200-yard medley relay as the quartet of first-year
Josh Travers, D'Avella, Giuliana, and Sonn combined for a time of 1:35.02. Giuliana, Sonn, Perez Bonilla, and Schreffler teamed up for the second fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle relay as well with a time of 1:25.63.
Ursinus will return to action on Friday, January 17th as they travel to Kutztown, Pennsylvania for a non-conference matchup against Division II opponent Kutztown University at 3 p.m.
