SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's swimming team earned five event victories, but were downed by No. 9 Swarthmore College, 244-58, during a home-and-home series versus the Garnet on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.
In the first event, the 500-yard freestyle senior
Katie Barlow (5:14.10) and junior
Sara Bozzomo (5:17.39) paced the Bears lineup by finishing third and fifth, respectively. The Bears shined during the 50-yard freestyle trial as first-year
Maria Wehmeyer collected the fastest time by touching the wall at 25.94, while sophomore
Morgan Valeriano placed first in the 200-yard IM time trial with a time of 2:09.70. Wehmeyer later earned the fastest time in the 100-yard backstroke time trial (1:03.57) with Valeriano earning collecting fourth overall in the 400-yard IM touching the wall at 4:42.27.
Junior
Sara Bozzomo shined for the Bears recording a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle time trial (53.19), 200-yard freestyle (1:58.62), and earned bronze in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.00. Later, Barlow (18:14.13) and senior
Emily Carkhuff (18.22.81) tallied the top-two times in the 1650-yard freestyle for Ursinus. In the 200-yard backstroke, Barlow recorded a fifth-place finish (2:10.17), Valeriano (2:12.15) took seventh, and senior
Molly Stevens (2:17.11) rounded out the top-ten in ninth.
The Bears closed out the meet with a third-place nod in the 400-yard freestyle relay as the quartet of Valeriano, Barlow, Bozzomo, and Stevens combined for a time of 3:42.30.
Ursinus will return to action on Friday, January 17th as they travel to Kutztown, Pennsylvania for a non-conference matchup against Division II opponent Kutztown University at 3 p.m.
