DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Behind a complete performance, the Ursinus College men's wrestling team cruised to a 28-13 victory over Delaware Valley University on Thursday evening.
With the victory, Ursinus improves to 6-6 overall behind their fourth straight dual meet victory, while the Aggies fall to 6-12 on the season. For the Bears, it was their first ever victory over Delaware Valley since the season series started in the 2021 season.
"What a night for the boys," Director of Wrestling
Joe Jamison said. "That win was a long time coming and everyone wrestled with the intention of making a statement. Everyone should enjoy the win, but we have a business trip tomorrow. We need to keep up the competitive intensity."
The Aggies jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as Malik Asfour (Ranked Third in Region III) recorded a 10-4 decision over senior
Franco Mazza at 125lbs. The lead did not hold for long as junior
Michael Adams tallied a forfeit at 133lbs, while sophomore
Andrew Schaen (141lbs) collected a 5-4 decision to give Ursinus a 9-3 advantage. Against Ryan Arndt at 141lbs, Schaen faced an early 3-0 deficit as Arndt connected on a single leg with 2:47 remaining in the opening period. Schaen quickly answered with an escape, before each wrestler defended a shot attempt from the opposition. Arndt nearly converted on a takedown towards the outside of the circle, but a great scramble from Schaen denied the scoring opportunity to keep the deficit at two entering the second period. After choosing bottom, Schaen earned an escape and gained a 5-3 lead with a takedown in the final moments of the second period. He initially shot a double leg before switching to a single leg and using a throw by for the go-ahead takedown. Schaen rode out most of the third period on top enroute to the 5-4 decision.
At 149lbs, sophomore
Max Parnis recorded a key 17-1 technical fall over Delaware Valley's Lucas Tirpak to extend the Bears lead to 14-3. Parnis collected the opening takedown at the 2:24-mark as he used an ankle pick to close out the opening period leading by two. After choosing bottom, Parnis reversed Tirpak and collected four near fall points on three different occasions to earn the technical fall victory.
The Aggies responded with a 1-0 decision at 157lbs as Charlie Robinson defeated senior
Wesley Tosto to make the match score 14-6 with five bouts remaining. The Bears increased their lead to 14 at 165lbs as sophomore
Braden Kmak pinned Declan Smith at the 1:11-mark to make the score 20-6, Ursinus. Kmak used a sweep single leg to gain the early advantage before connecting on a cross face cradle for the first period fall.
At 174lbs, Delaware Valley's Luke Moore collected a 15-7 major decision over junior
Anthony Cerulli to cut the Aggies deficit to 20-10 with three matches remaining. Next, junior
Nils Updale clinched the dual at 184lbs for the Bears as he collected a 19-3 technical fall over Aidan Murray to extend the Bears lead to 25-10. Updale recorded a quick takedown before using a cross face cradle to increase his lead to 7-0 with 1:02 remaining in the opening period. After an escape from the Aggies, Updale tallied his second takedown to increase his lead to 10-1 at the end of the first stanza. In the second period, Updale recorded three takedowns enroute to the 19-3 technical fall. Senior
Connor Fritsch earned two first period takedowns enroute to an 8-3 decision over Delaware Valley's at 197lbs to increase the Bears match lead to 28-10. Delaware Valley earned a 7-3 decision at 285lbs as Logan Flynn defeated sophomore
