TOWSON, Md. – The Ursinus Women's Tennis team rallied to defeat Goucher 4-3 in its fall dual match opener on Wednesday afternoon.
The Gophers took two of the three doubles matches to take the first point of the match. Senior
Kate Rubinkam and sophomore
Katie Yu swept past Lydia Hurst and Kendra Lanese 6-0 at the No. 3 doubles spot before junior
Morgan Coupe and first-year
Sara Steelesmith dropped a 6-3 match to Alexa Benedict and Lucy Ingraham at the No. 2 spot. Junior
Caroline Daly and first-year
Mariah Mays suffered a 6-4 setback to Meline Siggen and Natalia Navarro at the No. 1 doubles spot.
In singles play, Rubinkam got the Bears on the board with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over Lanese and Steelesmith won 6-1, 6-0 over Hurst at the No. 5 spot. Goucher won the next two points to move to the brink of winning the match as Daly dropped a 3-6, 3-6 No. 2 singles match to Siggen and Yu was bested at the No. 1 spot by Navarro 2-6, 3-6. Mays won a dramatic No. 3 singles match 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 over Ingraham to set the stage for Coupe to win the match for the Bears at the No. 4 spot by downing Benedict 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
