COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The 17th-ranked Ursinus women's wrestling team battled but eventually fell to No. 15 Lock Haven, 26-18, on Thursday evening at Helfferich Hall.
With the loss, Ursinus falls to 2-1 on the season, while the Bald Eagles improve to 1-0 overall. The defeat snaps the Bears' eight-match winning streak, which dated back to January 12th of last season.
"We wrestled well tonight, but unfortunately ended up on the losing end," Director of Wrestling
Joe Jamison said. "Everyone that stepped on the mat tonight battled and we are proud of our effort. Lock Haven is a great team and everyone did what they had to do tonight for the program."
The Bears jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead through the first two bouts as junior
Mandy Gavares opened the night with a 10-0 victory by superiority over Summer Batts to give Ursinus a 4-0 match lead. First-year
Aubree Butler shined in the 110-pound bout, collecting a pin at the 1:16 mark to extend the Bears' lead to 9-0. Butler fell behind 1-0 early before converting a four-point throw to take a 4-1 advantage. After the restart, she countered a shot from Lock Haven's Anna Lackey and threw her to her back for the first-period pin.
Lock Haven answered in the next two weight classes, earning a 13-2 victory by superiority at 117 pounds and a comeback 3-2 decision at 124 pounds to cut the Bears' lead to 11-7. In the 124-pound match, senior
Kalli Roskos controlled a 2-1 lead with under 30 seconds remaining, but a late takedown by Jayleah Platz gave Lock Haven the 3-2 decision.
Ursinus increased its lead to 14-7 in the 131-pound match as junior
Stacy Bloomfield earned a 6-0 decision over Lock Haven's Bella DeVito. Bloomfield recorded the opening takedown with 1:03 remaining in the first period, countering an attack, and spinning past DeVito's outstretched arms. She added two passivity points and a late takedown in the final period to secure the win. At 138 pounds, junior
Paisley Fox nearly converted a throw attempt, but Lock Haven's Charlotte Gilfoil later collected a fall at the 47-second mark to make it 14-12.
The Bears bounced back at 145 pounds as junior
Cloe Charlesworth earned a victory by criteria to push the Ursinus lead to 17-13. However, the Bald Eagles won each of the final three bouts by bonus points to secure the 26-18 match victory. Lock Haven received a pin at 160 pounds before tallying victories by superiority in each of the final two bouts.
Ursinus returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 22, as it competes at the Misericordia Invitational at 10 a.m.
