COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's swimming team closed out their regular season dual meet schedule by falling to Gettysburg College, 136-66, on Saturday afternoon from William Elliot Pool.
The Bears honored four seniors prior to the contest as
Katie Barlow,
Emily Carkhuff,
Molly Stevens, and
Alexandra Zelinske were honored for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to the Ursinus swimming team over the last four years.
Ursinus opened with a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay as the quartet of Zelinske, sophomore
Mia Tamburrino, Stevens, and sophomore
Melanie Hahn totaled a time of 1:56.05. Next, Carkuff collected a second-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle, while junior
Sara Bozzomo placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.71). Bozzomo narrowly defeated Gettysburg's Valerie Lawton who touched the wall at 2:00.91.
In the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore
Morgan Valeriano earned the second quickest time by touching the wall at 25.50, while first-year
Haley Lenker placed fifth (27.41). Barlow became the second Bear to earn an event victory as she claimed the best time in the 200-yard IM (2:13.04). The Ocean City, New Jersey native trailed by nearly two seconds to Gettysburg's Lanie McKenzie, before completing the comeback over the final lap. Later in the meet, Barlow added another victory in the 100-yard backstroke by touching the wall at 1:00.82 which ranks just shy of her career best time of 1:00.03.
The Bears added two of the top three times in the 100-yard freestyle as Bozzomo (55.24) and Hahn (55.43) placed second and third, respectively. Meanwhile, Carkhuff tallied her second top-two finish as she earned silver in the 500-yard freestyle behind a time of 5:29.93. Next, in the 100-yard breaststroke, Hahn placed third (1:12.41), while Tamburrino took fifth by touching the wall at 1:15.72.
Ursinus closed out the meet by finishing third in the 200-yard freestyle relay as the quartet of Bozzomo, Barlow, Stevens, and Valeriano combined for a time of 1:41.69.
The Bears close out their regular season schedule and will start tuning up for the Centennial Conference Championships starting on February 20th hosted by Franklin & Marshall College.
