PRINCETON, N.J. – Three Ursinus men's wrestlers kicked off the season for the 22nd-ranked Bears, competing at the Princeton Open on Sunday at Jadwin Gymnasium.
Seniors
Andrew Schaen (141),
Sean Cowan (174) and
Mohamed Abdelatty (285) represented the Bears as the lone Division III team competing among 13 Division I programs.
At 174 pounds, Cowan earned the Bears' lone victory in his first-round matchup, defeating Lehigh's Justin Onello by a 9-2 decision. Cowan recorded a pair of takedowns in the opening period and rode out the entire second period on top before adding an escape in the final stanza to earn the decision. In his Round of 16 matchup, Cowan fell by technical fall to Stanford's Colin Guffey before dropping his consolation bout by a 6-5 decision to Lehigh's Bekhruz Sadriddinov.
In the 141-pound weight class, Schaen dropped his opening bout to Rider's Jayden Sanchez by a third-period fall. Schaen tallied a pair of takedowns through the first two periods, but a takedown and four-point near fall in the final minute of the third period proved to be the difference. In his consolation bout, Schaen fell by an 18-2 technical fall to Penn's Alex Almeyda.
Abdelatty received a bye in the opening round, advancing to the Round of 16, where he fell by a 19-3 score to top-seeded Nathan Taylor of Lehigh. In the consolation bracket, Abdelatty fell by a 5-2 score in sudden victory against James Lynch of Rider University to close out the tournament for Ursinus. During the match, each wrestler scored a reversal in the second period before Lynch secured the victory with a takedown in the first overtime period.
