Bears blast Alvernia, 12-0; Thren ties CC mark with six goals in a game

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The third-ranked Ursinus College field hockey team collected 35 shots on Tuesday as the Bears (1-0) blasted Alvernia 12-0 on in the season opener for the both teams.
Sophomore forward Alyssa Thren (Barto, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) tied the Centennial Conference record, as she collected six goals in the game. She had all four of the Ursinus goals in the first half.

The six goals ties the record held by Bears standout Jennie Moore, who got six goals in a win over Haverford on September 20, 2008. In last year's opener, senior forward Jen Hooven (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) had five goals.

Thren scored her first goal just 4:42 in unassisted, then added her second goal at 10:49 when she scored off an assist from junior midfielder Megan Yoder (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite). Goal number three came at 14:06 when she scored unassisted, followed by her fourth goal at 17:01 on an assist from junrio midfielder Michelle Wimmer (Palm, Pa./Upper Perkiomen).

In the second half, Hooven scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Thren at 36:14. Thren then scored her fifth goal of the game at 39:01 for a 6-0 lead.

Freshman forward Catherine Bitterly (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) had her first goal of the year at 44:55 on an assist from Yoder. Yoder had three assists on the day, with her third coming on Thren's sixth goal at 49:26 for an 8-0 lead.

At 55:31, junior midfielder Bridget Resetco (West Chester, Pa./Downingtown West) scored on a penalty stroke. Yoder then scored her first goal of the season at 56:58 unassisted for a 10-0 lead.

At 61:40, sophomore forward Corinne Freeman (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vienney) scored on an assist from junior back Taylor Weidensaul (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) for an 11-0 lead. The final goal came at 67:46 as freshman midfielder Jen Pappas (Potomac, Md./Saint Johns College) scored on an assist from Bitterly.

Senior goalkeeper Erica Scott (Carney's Point, N.J./St. Elizabeth) and junior goalkeeper LauraLee Lightwood-Mater (Bethlehem, Pa./George School) combined on the shutout. Scott made two saves, as the Crusaders (0-1) had just three shots.

Ursinus now begins an extremely difficult stretch of games, starting with Saturday night's showdown with Messiah in Grantham at 7:00 p.m.
