Football rolls Juniata, 37-27

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Ursinus College scored 21 straight points as the Bears (4-2, 3-2 Centennial) defeated a feisty Juniata (1-5, 0-5 Centennial) squad 37-27 at Knox Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Ursinus junior quarterback Chris Curran (Oceanview, N.J./Ocean City) threw for 375 yards and four scores, while running for another as Ursinus won its third straight game and third straight conference game.

Junior wide out Jerry Rahill (Chalfont, Pa./Archbishop Wood) caught a game-high eight passes for 101 yards and a score, while sophomore wide out Darius Jones (Lawnside, N.J./Haddon Heights), senior running back Jason Golderer (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt)  and sophomore Josh Williams (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks South) all caught TD passes.  Golderer also finished with 111 yards.

Ursinus junior defensive back Tyrell Martin (Philadelphia, Pa./Frankford) made ten tackles, all solo stops while senior Chris Rountree (Lawnside, N.J./Haddon Heights) moved to within one of tying the career interception record at Ursinus with a late pick in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Freshman kicker Eric Boyer (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) kicked a 29-yard field goal in the win, while Rountree and Golderer each averaged 30 plus yards on two kick returns.

Juniata took the early lead in the first quarter as the Eagles used a short field on a punting miscue to score a 35-yard field goal from Scott Andrews with 10:09 left for a 3-0 lead. The Eagles would use the field goal again on their next drive as Andrews netted a 24-yard field goal with 3;29 left for a  6-0 lead.

Ursinus scored on a 29-yard field goal with 28 seconds left in the first quarter to cut the deficit to 6-3.

On its next drive, Ursinus went 11 plays in 80-yards capped by a one-yard run from Curran with 6:03 left for a 10-6 lead. Juniata would put together a long drive of their own, but, Andrews missed a 32-yard field goal with 32 seconds left in the half.

Juniata would take a 14-10 lead in the third quarter as they took the opening kickoff and went 68-yards in 10 plays capped by a one-yard run from sophomore quarterback Ward Udinski for a 14-10 Juniata lead.

The Bears then took the lead for good on its next drive on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Curran to Williams with 6:04 left.

A fumble recovery by junior linebacker Brian Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa./Episcopal Academy) on Juniata's third play from scrimmage following the score set up the Bears next score. With the ball on the Eagles' 38-yard line, Curran fired a bullet to Golderer for a TD pass and a 24-14 lead with 4:38 left.

Ursinus would go up 31-14 on a 52-yard scoring pass from Curran to Jones with 2:21 left in the third.

Juniata cut the deficit to 31-21 on a six yard run by Zach McCaulley with 14:53 left in the game, but, Ursinus would score on its next drive as Curran threw an eight-yard pass to Rahill with 13:50 left for a 37-21 lead.

Juniata would hit the end zone one last time as Udinski threw a 10-yard pass with 7:21 left for a 37-27 Ursinus lead.

Juniata would put together one last drive, but, Rountree intercepted the ball with 1:35 left to end the game.

Ursinus will host Susquehanna on Friday evening at 7.
