Football falls to Johns Hopkins, 35-17

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. –Johns Hopkins senior running back Jonathan Rigaud rushed for 238 yards and four scores as the tenth-ranked Blue Jays (8-0, 7-0 Centennial) defeated Ursinus (5-3, 4-3 Centennial) 35-17 on Saturday afternoon at Patterson Field.

Rigaud had scoring runs of 5, 70, 29 and 18 yards as the Blue Jays clinched a share of the Centennial Conference crown with the win and a loss by F&M to Susquehanna.

Ursinus got 105 yards on seven catches from junior wide receiver Jerry Rahill (Chalfont, Pa./Archbishpo Wood), and was named the Kenneth Walker Trophy winner which honors the most outstanding player from Ursinus in the annual Homecoming Game.

Junior quarterback Chris Curran (Oceanview, N.J./Ocean City) finished the game 24-for-36 for 239 yards and a score. Junior running back Bryan Ellis (Owing Mills, Md./McDonogh School) had 53 yards on 17 carries.
Johns Hopkins got 130 yards from junior quarterback Robbie Matey on 12-for-23 passing.

Defensively, Ursinus freshman linebacker James Roccograndi (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) had a team and game –high ten tackles. Senior defensive back Scott Gardus (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury Township) had an interception.

Johns Hopkins struck first as they got the ball following a fumble by Ellis on the Bears' 42-yard line and went 42 yards in seven plays with Rigaud scoring from five yards out for a 7-0 lead with 11:21 left in the first quarter. Ursinus got on the board on its next possession with a 23-yard field goal from freshman kicker Eric Boyer (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) with 7:20 left, making the score 7-3.

After stopping Hopkins on its next drive, Ursinus went 93 yards on 14 plays to the Hopkins 1-yard line. On a first-and-goal, Curran rushed off the left side but had the ball stripped before he went into the end zone. The ball was recovered by JHU sophomore linebacker Hani Annabi in the end zone, giving the Blue Jays a touchback.

The Blue Jays would capitalize and go up 14-3 on a 70-yard run by Rigaud on the third play of the drive with 11:12 left in the second quarter.

Hopkins upped the lead to 21-3 with 8:17 to go in the third quarter on a 29-yard run by Rigaud. Ursinus cut the deficit to 21-10 with 1:50 left in the third quarter on a three-yard touchdown run by senior fullback Teddy Conrad (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West).

However, Hopkins would answer again as senior running back Scott Barletta scored on a 25-yard run for a 28-10 Blue Jay lead with 29 seconds left in the third quarter.

Curran would hook up with Rahill for a 38-yard touchdown pass on Ursinus' next drive for a  28-17 Blue Jay lead with 13:31 left. The final score for Hopkins would come at the end of a 11-play, 80-yard drive on a 18-yard rush by Rigaud.

Hopkins finished with 484 yards of total offense, including 354 on the ground.

Ursinus will travel to Muhlenberg on Saturday.
