Women's Basketball drops CC opener to Gettysburg, 56-47

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Ursinus nearly overcame a 13-point halftime deficit but cutting the Gettysburg lead to one-point halfway through the second half.

The Bullets (3-0, 1-0 Centennial) however, never relinquished the lead as the Bullets defeated the Bears (1-2, 0-1 Centennial) 56-47 in the conference opener for both teams Wednesday night at Bream Gymnasium.

Junior guard Alyssa Polimeni (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) and junior forward Jessica Porada (Morristown, N.J./Morris Catholic) each had 14 points for the Bears, while sophomore guard Gianna Pownall (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) had nine.

The Bears were hampered by cold shooting on the night, as they went 18-for-65 from the field (27.7 percent).

Trailing 25-12 at intermission, the Bears made a short run by outscoring the Bullets 8-2 over a 1:45 span in the second half to get within one at 35-34 on a three-pointer by Polimeni with 13 minutes left.

After Pownall's jumper with 11:39 left made the score 37-36 in favor of the Bullets, Gettysburg went on a 7-0 run over the next 6:30 to pull away for good.

The Bullets held a 41-37 lead on the glass, but, Ursinus had a 17-7 lead on the offensive side of the glass with Porada having a game-high four. She finished with seven total rebounds.

Ursinus opens its home schedule on Saturday by hosting Johns Hopkins.
