Football evens record at 2-2 with 33-17 win over McDaniel

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus junior quarterback Sal Bello (Phoenixville, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) set a Ursinus record for passing yards in a game with 465 as the Bears (2-2, 1-2 Centennial) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 33-17 win over McDaniel (0-4, 0-3 Centennial) Saturday afternoon.

Bello set the school record previously held by Kevin Monahan, who threw for 442 in last season's win over Dickinson.

Bello threw scoring passes of 78, 66, 47 and 28 in the win, as he finished 22-for-42. Junior wide receiver Matthew Raymond (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) caught four of those passes for a game-high 148 yards and two scores, while junior running back Corey Kelly (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) caught six passes for 97 yards and a score. Kelly also rushed for another score as Ursinus scored 26 straight points after trailing 9-7.

Defensively, junior linebacker Timothy Rafter (Springfield, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) had eight tackles, while four different players had interceptions. Sophomore defensive back Heath Hidlay (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) had two interceptions on the afternoon.

McDaniel struck first as the Green Terror went 80 yards in ten plays, capped by a 30-yard touchdown toss from Matty Callahan to Sean Montgomery with 7:57 left for a  6-0 Green Terror lead. Ursinus would answer quickly as Bello threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Shawn Hackett (Swarthmore, Pa./Ridley) with 5:58 left for a  7-6 lead.

On McDaniel's next drive, Hidlay intercepted a ball at the Green Terror 45 to end the drive.

McDaniel would get the ball back after forcing Ursinus to turn it over on downs, and kick a 24-yard field goal by Spencer Wiersberg with 13:52 left in the half for a 9-7 Green Terror lead.

The lead would be short lived, as Bello threw a 78-yard touchdown pass to Raymond 31 seconds later for a 13-9 lead. Ursinus would go up 20-9 when Kelly would score on a 3-yard rush with 10:42 left.

Ursinus' next score, a 28-yard touchdown pass from Bello to Kelly with 8:45 left in the third, was set up by an interception by Hidlay.

Ursinus' final score with 45 seconds left in the third was a 47-yard pass from Bello to Raymond to make the score 33-9. McDaniel would score with 9:16 left in the fourth on 40-yard fumble recovery by junior linebacker Claude-Michel Richardson.

Both teams ran more than 80 plays, with Ursinus' 526 yards of total offense being the most since the Dickinson game last year, when the Bears finished with 602 yards of total offense.

Ursinus goes to Moravian next Saturday, closing out the first half of the season.
