Field Hockey Dispatches McDaniel on Family Day

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Senior forward Colleen Leahy put up another five-point afternoon to power the Ursinus College field hockey team to a 6-2 Centennial Conference victory over McDaniel on Family Day in Collegeville.

Leahy, who also went for two goals and an assist in Wednesday's rout of Bryn Mawr, got the 7th-ranked Bears (7-2, 4-1) off to a fast start with a goal in the 6th minute and added a second marker just before halftime on a scrum in front of the cage. Ursinus, wearing pink uniforms in support of Play4TheCure, improved to 14-0 all-time against McDaniel (2-6, 1-2) since the series began in 2003.

After senior Amber Steigerwalt staked the Bears to a 2-0 lead in the 8th minute, blasting a shot from the top right-hand side of the circle, Leahy set up classmate Ann Kopera for a third Ursinus goal. Stationed in front of the cage, Leahy tipped a pass from the right side across the goalmouth to Kopera, who maneuvered towards the front of the cage and ripped a shot into the back of the net at the 21:29 mark.

The Green Terror got on the board in the 27th minute as Gabrielle Yore scored on a shot from the box after a penalty corner insert by Sarah Bach. Their lead cut to two, the Bears got back on track just before intermission when Leahy notched her second of the day.

Junior Brooke Overly, who facilitated Leahy's first tally, knocked in a goal of her own on a dish from Steigerwalt. The senior sent a pass from the middle of the circle to the right side of the goal, where Overly was waiting to tap it in. Freshman Gemma Dufoe capped the Bears' offensive output in the 49th minute, putting in a rebound off a shot by Kopera.

Meghan Sadler found the back of the cage with 1:54 to play for McDaniel.

Overly produced four shots for Ursinus, which enjoyed a 17-6 advantage in that category and earned 12 penalty corners to the Green Terror's five. Overly had two goals in the victory over the Owls earlier in the week. Senior Rachel Zane matched Leahy with three attempts.

Sophomore Jules Singer played the first 57 minutes and change between the posts before being replaced by junior Sydney Godbey, who made the only save between the two.

Christina Gooding finished with three saves for McDaniel.

Ursinus has outscored the Green Terror, 70-10, in the last 10 meetings between the programs.

The Bears are back on the Snell Field turf on Wednesday, October 5, when they entertain Haverford in CC action to conclude a three-game home stand.
