Men's Soccer Stumbles at Misericordia

Box Score

DALLAS, Pa. – Misericordia scored three times in the first 13 minutes, including a goal just 34 seconds in and another less than three minutes later, and the Ursinus College men's soccer team was unable to make up the ground in a 4-2 non-conference defeat Saturday.

Junior Kyle Woulfe scored his first career goal – on the first collegiate assist by senior Justin Mendez – for the Bears (1-1), who were two days removed from a thrilling last-minute victory over Susquehanna in their 2016 opener. Senior Ryan Molyneaux netted his first goal of the season on an assist from fellow co-captain Noah Kimelheim with 19 seconds to play.

Misericordia (2-0) needed just over a half-minute to gain the upper hand, with Matt Norcini's quick strike serving as a harbinger of an inauspicious start for the Bears. Niko Amity tallied to double the margin just over three minutes in, and Barry Kabinoff's marker with exactly 13 minutes gone made it 3-0 in favor of the hosts.

Sophomore keeper Brandon Lillian replaced senior Vince Maiorino (three saves) after intermission and made one save before conceding an 86th-minute goal.

Misericordia held a 12-8 advantage in shots and a 9-7 edge in corner kicks. Mendez, Ryan Molyneaux, and sophomore Justin Molyneaux led Ursinus with two shots apiece.

The Bears used a set piece to get on the board. Mendez' corner kick found the head of Woulfe, who re-directed it past the Misericordia keeper and into the back of the net to open his collegiate account in the 50th minute.

Ryan Molyneaux put a shot on frame just 38 ticks later, but his effort was saved. The veteran would not be denied a second time, however, as a shot from Kimelheim ricocheted off the hands of the Cougar keeper, who could not corral the rebound before Molyneaux sent an angled shot into the lower left corner of the net. With the goal, Molyneaux became the 37th player in school history to reach 10 career scores. The helper was the second of Kimelheim's career.

With his three saves, Maiorino is the 10th goalkeeper in program history to eclipse 100 for his career.

The Bears have a week off before entertaining Cabrini in a non-conference matchup on Saturday, September 10.
