Volleyball Dropped by Haverford

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College volleyball team fell to Haverford Wednesday night, 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-19), in a Centennial Conference match.

The Bears (5-12, 0-4) hung with the Fords early in the first set, grabbing four of the first six points, with a kill from sophomore Miranda Foster followed by an ace from classmate Lauren Novotny to open the match. After that, the home side fell victim to the service of Haverford's Claire Nicholas, who recorded a pair of aces in a seven-point run for the Fords (11-7, 1-3). The Bears buckled down when the set was on the line, recording four points in a row to pull the score to 22-16. Sophomore Lydia Pierce was able to notch a kill before freshman Megan O'Leary reeled off three aces in a row.

Haverford cleaned up some mistakes in the second set, but the Bears attempted to keep it close. Senior Allison Raff, sophomore Kelly Piotrowicz and Foster each recorded a pair of kills in the set. Piotrowicz paired with Foster on a block as well.

Set No. 3 was a strange one. Ursinus jumped out to a 6-2 lead thanks to a kill from Raff that was followed by three aces from freshman Grace Sullivan. The Bears were battling to keep the lead until the score got to 14-10 in their favor. That's when things changed with a timeout by Haverford. During that stoppage, it was discovered that the Bears had made an illegal substitution a few points back. The officials adjusted the score retroactively to that point in the match, awarding one point to the Fords while subtracting four from Ursinus. The Fords would not relinquish the lead after the change.

Piotrowicz led all Bears with eight kills in the match, adding ten assists and seven digs to her final stat line. Freshman Paige DeAlba reached double digits in assists with 13 – the third time in the last four games that she's tallied at least 10. Raff recorded another all-around performance, totaling five kills and eight digs.

The Bears continue their homestand on Saturday with a CC match against Franklin & Marshall.
