Mayer Lifts Field Hockey Past Fords in OT

Box Score

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Locked in an overtime duel at Haverford, Ursinus College field hockey's Jamie Mayer took matters into her own hands as she sent the Bears home with a 2-1 overtime victory on the Main Line.

Just 25 seconds into overtime, Mayer poked the ball away to herself as Haverford's goalie was creeping out to attempt a clear. Mayer then sent a low backhanded shot into the right corner of the cage. Mayer's game-winner marked her fifth goal of the year and helped the Bears remain unbeaten in 20 all-time matchups with Haverford.

Centennial Conference-leading No. 20 Ursinus (7-3, 5-0) was mired into a tightly-contested battle with Haverford. The Bears held on to an early lead but a late Fords goal in the 62nd minute forced extra time.

In the second half, Haverford (4-5, 0-4) turned up the pressure and held Ursinus to just one shot. The Fords built up more pressure until they finally broke through to tie the game. In the 62nd minute, Haverford was awarded a crucial penalty stroke attempt. Casey Wakai took the penalty, shooting to the top right corner to knot the match 1-1.

The Fords peppered 10 second-half shots on Ursinus senior goalie Jules Singer. Singer, last week's Centennial Conference defensive player of the week, came up with a bunch of key saves – four in total –to keep the Fords from doing any more damage in the late stages.

With five minutes remaining, Singer made a beautiful diving kick save to deny a Haverford shot. Singer stood strong against two Haverford penalty corners with no time remaining in regulation.

Early on in the match, the Bears struck first just four minutes in courtesy of sophomore Devon Carroll. Off a penalty corner, Carroll powered in a shot from in front of the cage on a feed from senior Mikayla Jordan.

The first half featured two shots for the Bears and one shot for the Fords.

Haverford goalie Sunny Truslow made one save on the night.

The Bears do battle next at No. 12 Franklin & Marshall Saturday at noon.
