Grenda's Brace Sinks Shoremen in Double-OT

Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Ursinus College men's soccer team took another major step in its building process on Saturday, snatching a 2-1 victory at No. 24 Washington College on a golden goal by Marco Grenda with 4:58 remaining in the second overtime.

Grenda's second goal of the afternoon - and his conference-leading 10th of the season - handed the Bears (6-4, 2-2)  their first victory over a nationally ranked program since 2013, and only the second road win over such a squad in program history. One week earlier, Ursinus routed Dickinson, 3-0, for its first league win in seven years.

In a chippy game dotted with seven yellow cards between the two sides, the visitors jumped on top on Grenda's first goal around the midway point of the first half. Washington College (7-3, 3-1) needed little time to equalize, pulling level about seven minutes later on a goal by Cole Gifford.

Despite being outshot, 6-2, in the first half and 6-3 in the second, Tyler Lewin (three saves) and the back line held strong for the Bears, who managed to get the game to an extra session. After a scoreless first overtime period, Tommy Mollis dribbled down the right sideline and delivered a perfect high-arcing cross to a waiting Grenda at the far post, who headed it in easily to set off a dogpile on the far sideline.

Grenda has enjoyed a remarkable campaign to date. The junior leads all Centennial Conference players with 10 goals, and his fourth brace of the season made him the first Ursinus player since Ryan Butler in 2013 to register double-digit goals in a single season.

Mollis' assist was his second of the season.

The Bears look to keep the momentum going at Haverford next Saturday.
