COLLEGEVILLE, PA. – The Ursinus College men's soccer team battled throughout a rainy afternoon but eventually fell to Washington College 2-0 from Patterson Field on Saturday. A chippy back and forth contest saw each team be awarded a penalty kick and eight cards issued throughout the Centennial Conference matchup.
With the loss, Ursinus fell to 1-6-2 on the season and 0-4 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Shoremen improve to 3-3-3 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play.
Washington College jumped on the board first in the 9
th minute as the Shoremen were awarded a penalty kick after a Bears defender was called for a foul inside the box. Washington College senior Ben Strine used a strong left footed shot snuck his shot past
Kirk Ransome in net for his fourth goal of the season. Tensions started to rise on both sides as three yellow cards were issued over the next ten minutes. At the 23:32 mark of the first half, sophomore Alex Woll was issued a yellow after a sliding tackle setting up the Shoremen with a free kick. Ben Strine stepped up from 25 yards out and delivered a great chance, but Ransome and the defense stood tall stopping the Shoremen's opportunity.
With seven minutes remaining in the first half, the Bears earned their chance for the equalizer but a shot from first-year
AJ Torres was saved by the Shoremen's Anthony Pinto. Washington College almost added a late goal in the 39
th minute after a corner opportunity. The cross found the head of Sebastien Linares and his header hit the post and Ransome saved the next two chances to keep it a one-goal game at halftime.
Early in the second half, junior
Harry Lorenc was issued his second yellow card of the contest, resulting in the Bears playing a man down for most of the second half. The Shoremen would capitalize in the 60
th minute after a foul was called on the Bears around 35 yards out. Shoremen's Cole Gifford quickly played a free kick and found teammate Ben Horgan sneaking past the Bears defense. Horgan sent a low shot past Ransome in net to make the score 2-0.
Ursinus earned a chance to cut the deficit in the 68
th minute as
Nate Berger stepped up for a penalty kick. Berger's line drive shot was denied by the Shoremen, a diving save from junior Anthony Pinto. The Bears just missed another opportunity in the 83
rd minute, as a deflected ball found
Sevag Yepoyan with space in the box. Yepoyan fired a shot on net but a diving save from Pinto kept the Bears off the board.
The Bears will look to bounce back on Wednesday as they travel to Bryn Athyn for a non-conference matchup at 7pm.
