IMMACULATA, PA. – The Ursinus College Volleyball team earned a straight set 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-22, 25-12) over Immaculata in non-conference action on Wednesday night from Alumnae Hall.
With the win, Ursinus improved to 13-5 overall, meanwhile the Mighty Macs of the Atlantic East conference fell to 5-9 on the season. Senior
Katie Cressman continued her stellar play with her 12-straight game with double-digit kills, while leading the way with a game-high 12 kills and a .357 hitting percentage. Sophomore
Caroline Sherman added eight kills, while junior
Haley Spotts finished with six kills and a team-high .667 hitting percentage. Sophomore
Rachel Bernard paced the offense with 11 assists and two aces.
Ashley Kelly and
Megan Aube led the Bears on the defensive side with six digs a piece.
Ursinus jumped out to a 10-5 lead early in the first set, after kills from Sherman and first-year
Noelle Smits. The Mighty Macs earned the next two points after capitalizing on back-to-back errors from the Bears to cut their deficit to three. Each team traded points before a kill from Spotts gave the Bears a six-point lead. With Ursinus leading 14-8, Immaculata rallied off five straight points to cut their deficit to one midway through the first set. The Bears answered with a 5-2 run lead by kills from Bernard and Cressman, while an ace from Kelly made the score 19-15. Ursinus closed out the set on a 6-0 run, behind kills from Cressman, Smits, and first-year
Erin Dychdala.
Immaculata bounced back in the second set jumping out to a 7-2 lead after five-straight points. The Bears slowly started to comeback after three consecutive points when Cressman and Sherman combined for back-to-back kills. Ursinus tied the match at seventeen a piece after four consecutive points behind back-to-back kills from Smits and two Mighty Macs errors. The Bear's closed out the set on a 5-2 run, after Smits used consecutive aces and Sherman capitalized on a pass from Bernard for her fourth kill of the set.
In the third set, Immaculata earned an early advantage but an ace from junior
Gabby McGinn tied the match at five a piece. Ursinus used a 5-2 run lead by a trio of kills by Cressman to regain the lead. The Mighty Macs battled back cutting their deficit to one, after a kill from Emma Hodgson made the score 11-10 Bears. With Bernard and Aube serving for the Bears, Ursinus rattled off a 12-1 run capturing the momentum and a 23-11 advantage late in the match. The Bears run was led by two aces from Bernard and kills from Cressman, Spotts, and Sherman. Ursinus closed out the set with back-to-back points after a kill from Spotts and an ace from McGinn.
Ursinus hit .268 as a team including a tremendous .429 hitting percentage in the third set. The Bears finished with an 11-6 advantage in aces while holding a slight 11-10 edge in errors.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday traveling to Carlisle, Pennsylvania for a tri-match with Dickinson and Catholic University.
