ABINGTON, PA. – Junior
Liv Morrow and first-year
Sophia Lutz scored their first collegiate goals as the Ursinus College women's soccer team shutouts Penn State Abington 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, Ursinus improved to 5-5-4 on the season, meanwhile the Nittany Lions fell to 4-10-1 overall.
The Nittany Lions earned the first opportunity of the match in the seventh minute, as Madison McDowell collected a rebound but her shot missed high of the net. The Bears answered with back-to-back shots from senior
Morgan Raley and junior
Hannah Brainsky. Raley's shot towards the bottom of the net was saved by Abington's Rachel Wilfrid and Brainsky's shot missed just wide right of the goal post. In the 13
th minute after a foul on the Bears, McDowell missed a free kick from about 30 yards out just above the crossbar.
The Bears finally broke through in the 22
nd minute, as Lutz split two Nittany Lions defenders and sent a pass to junior
Ciara Rago. She took a touch and settled the ball, before passing back to Lutz for a one-touch opportunity. Lutz's shot sailed past the Nittany Lions goalkeeper and into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
The Bears continued the offensive pressure adding two more shots in the 27
th minute, as sophomore
Grace Senese and Morrow each earned scoring opportunities. The consistent pressure paid off in the 36
th minute when senior
Izzy Allocco found Morrow for her first goal of the season. Allocco took on three Abington defenders and found Morrow inside the box and her touch snuck past the Nittany Lions defense for a 2-0 advantage.
Just under four minutes later, a goal kick found junior
Alex Chalmers near the midfield. Chalmers switched fields sending a cross to sophomore
Olivia Losurdo who found Morrow once again for her second goal of the contest giving the Bears a 3-0 advantage heading into halftime. Morrow's second goal came from a one-touch as Losurdo was awarded her second assist of the season. At the break, Ursinus held much of the momentum holding a 10-3 advantage in shots and a slight 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Bears carried the momentum over into the second half earning the first two opportunities after back-to-back corner kicks. Sophomore
Carlie Shiller earned the first chance in the 46
th minute with her shot being blocked by the Nittany Lions defense. Brainsky followed up creating a scoring opportunity sending a pass to first year
Kalli Roskos that was saved by Abington's netminder.
Raley and first year
Alyssa Himmelreich each earned scoring opportunities later in the match, but each chance was saved by the Nittany Lions defense. The Bears defense once again was stellar all afternoon earning their seventh shutout of the season and holding Penn State Abington to just three shots in the second half.
Junior goalkeeper
Kaela Frenchman earned the win in net for Ursinus as she split time with classmate
Maddie Nau who earned the only Bears save of the match. Abington's Rachel Wilfrid earned 10 saves over 90 minutes of action for the Nittany Lions. The Bears possessed the ball for much of the contest earning a 30-7 edge in shots and an 8-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Lancaster, Pennsylvania for a Centennial Conference matchup with Franklin & Marshall at 6pm.
