Mollis Earns Hat Trick as Men's Soccer Defeats Nittany Lions, 3-1

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore Tommy Mollis recorded a hat trick to lift the Ursinus men's soccer team to a 3-1 on Tuesday night in Patterson Field in non-conference action.
 
 
With the win, the Bears improved to 4-9-3 overall as they completed their non-conference schedule. Meanwhile, the Nittany Lions of the United East Conference fell to 5-11-1 overall.
 
 
Mollis got things going for the Bears right in the third minute as he scored the first of his three goals off a header after sophomore Luke Luehrs. Ursinus continued to maintain possession in their attacking end and Mollis struck once more in the ninth minute after beating a diving Nittany Lions goalkeeper on a low shot to the right side of the net. Junior Harry Lorenc found Mollis ahead of the defense up on the left side to set up the goal. Mollis capped off his hat trick in the 20th minute after being set up in the middle of the box off a pair of passes from senior Marco Grenda and sophomore Jack Schmidt. The Bears nearly extended their advantage in the 30th minute when Grenda hit the post with his shot attempt. Berks began generating some pressure towards the end of the first half and broke the shutout in the 39th minute, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
 
 
 
In the opening minutes of the second half each offense started to ramp up the pressure at the Nittany Lions earned the first opportunity after a set piece from midfield. Penn St. Berks' Caleb Franklin fired a shot on net in the 47th minute that was denied by Schoenberg in net. Ursinus answered back with back-to-back shots from Mollis with the first missing high and the second being blocked by the Nittany Lions defense. In the 60th minute on a corner kick the pass from Grenda inside the box but his header was saved by the Nittany Lions netminder. In the 71st minute, junior Joshua Coster collected a rebound outside the box and fired a shot high of the net. The Bears earned two more shots in the final minutes of the second half, but each was saved by the Nittany Lions defense. Luehrs and senior Nate Berger each were credited with scoring opportunities.
 
 
 
 
 
The Bears held a 29-15 shot advantage for the contest but just a 13-8 edge in shots on goal. Ursinus held a sizable 9-3 edge in corner kicks. Ursinus senior goalkeeper Peter Schoenberg earned the win after making six saves during the full 90 minutes. Meanwhile, Ethan Brazier suffered the loss for the Nittany Lions after making 10 saves in the entire 90 minutes.
 
 
The Bears will wrap up their 2022 season on Saturday, October 29th as they will host McDaniel for senior day at 3 p.m.
