Raley's Goal Lifts Women's Soccer over McDaniel on Senior Day

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Senior Morgan Raley converted on a penalty kick in the 58th minute to give Ursinus a 1-0 Centennial Conference victory over McDaniel on Saturday afternoon. The Bears capped off a senior day celebration with their first victory over the Green Terror since a 3-1 victory in 2011.


 
The Bears celebrated six seniors on the afternoon as Raley, Raya Mount, Brooke Ludwig, Makayla Heisler, Izzy Dalesandro, and Alice Poindexter were recognized prior to the game for their dedication and commitment to the program. Junior goalkeeper Kaela Frenchman and the Bears defense earned their eighth shutout of the season, while Frenchman broke the school record for save percentage (.879) in a season and goals against average (0.76).


 
With the win, the Bears finished the season with a 7-6-4 overall record and 3-5-2 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Green Terror advanced to the Centennial Conference playoffs and currently sit at 8-5-4 overall and 5-3-2 in Conference play.  


 
Ursinus earned the first opportunity of the match in the 4th minute, as Ciara Rago sent a shot on net. Rago's shot was saved by McDaniel's Katherine Carstensen. The Bears had a trio of opportunities over the next ten minutes as Rago and Zoe Moosbrugger each missed high. In the 16th minute, Izzy Allocco sent a cross into the box finding Alex Chalmers for a scoring opportunity. Chalmers' shot was fired high to keep the score tied at zero. With under ten minutes remaining in the half, Raley created an opportunity for the Bears offense. On the far sideline, Raley sent an arching cross into the box towards two Bears, but Carstensen denied the scoring opportunity. McDaniel's Samantha Rodrick earned a scoring opportunity in the 37th minute, but Frenchman was credited with save to keep the score tied. Ursinus maintained much of the possession in the first half holding an 8-2 advantage in shots and a 2-0 edge in corner kicks.
 


 
In the opening minute of the second half, McDaniel earned a corner kick opportunity, but the chance was denied by the Bears defense. Frenchman and the defense continued to deny the Green Terror offense as the Bears backline stuffed back-to-back opportunities in the 55th minute. In the 58th minute, the Bears earned a free kick along the far corner and after the cross made its way into the box a foul was called on McDaniel. The Bears were awarded a penalty kick and Raley stepped up and drilled a line drive shot into the bottom corner of the net to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. The Green Terror ramped up the pressure finding many opportunities inside the box, but each time Frenchman and the defense stood all denying every opportunity. Frenchman earned seven saves in the second half to go along with nine for the game. Meanwhile, for the Green Terror Katherine Carstensen was dealt the loss finishing with four saves over 90 minutes of action.
