COLLEGEVILLE, PA. – The Ursinus College men's soccer team (2-7-2, 0-5 CC) was defeated by visiting Haverford College (3-6-3, 1-3-1 CC) Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action at Patterson Field. The Bears celebrated their annual Kids Day holding a clinic prior to the match and at halftime as over 100 kids participated in a halftime game on the pitch.
Ursinus opened the contest with the first chance of a scoring opportunity in the 8
th minute, as senior
Aidan O'Malley ripped a free kick just wide of the net. In the 15
th minute, Haverford's forward Caleb Miller sent a curling pass into the box, but great reflexes from Bears' junior goalkeeper
Kirk Ransome denied the opportunity.
Ursinus jumped on the board first in the 29
th minute as first-year
Colin Deal scored after a rebound in front of the net. On the counterattack O'Malley sent a through pass down the sideline to
Marco Grenda. The senior forward sent a pass into the box and after a one touch shot deflected off the goalie, Deal secured the rebound and tucked it into the back of the net.
The Fords quickly responded with a goal of their own in the 33
rd minute as Miller tucked in a free kick from 30 yards out. Miller's free kick curled around the Bears' wall and off the far post for the equalizer. Ursinus amped the pressure in the closing minutes of the first half, firing off five shots including three on net. Their best chance coming after Grenda created space in the box and his shot nailed off the post to keep the score tied heading into half-time.
Haverford carried the momentum over into the second half, finding the back of the net twice in the opening five minutes. After a foul inside the box, a penalty kick was awarded to the Fords and Miller stepped up and delivered his second goal of the contest. In net, Ransome had a great opportunity to deny the try as he predicted the correct direction of the penalty shot. Minutes later, Haverford's Andrew Fritz scored after a cross from Brian Lorenz found him behind the Bears defense giving the visitors a 3-1 lead.
Ursinus answered with three consecutive shots in the 54
th minute but each were denied by the Fords defense and goalkeeper Dylan Ioffreda. The Bears final opportunity came in the 87
th minute as sophomore
Luke Luehrs put a shot on net that was saved by Ioffreda.
The Bears held a slight 16-13 advantage in shots while the Fords held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Bears' goalkeeper Ransome collected three saves on the afternoon while Haverford's Dylan Ioffreda earned the win in net with eight saves.
Ursinus will return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Scranton for a non-conference matchup starting at 7pm.
