COLLEGEVILLE, PA. – The Ursinus College women's tennis team closed out their fall season with a doubleheader sweep of York College (5-4) and Marymount University (7-2) on Saturday afternoon.
With the sweep, the Bears improved to 3-0 on the season while the Spartans fell to 2-2 and the Saints sit at 4-2 overall.
Ursinus vs York (5-4)
The Bears faced an early deficit after losing two of three doubles matches heading into singles play. Junior
Claire Burke and senior
Ava Compagnoni took down Morrissey Walsh and Bri Serruto 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. First-years
Fiona Finnerty and
Bella Vassalluzzo were edged 8-7 by Hannah Sult and Claire Bernard at No. 3 doubles. Sophomores
Allie Armour and
Shannon Stewart were narrowly defeated 8-7 at No. 1 doubles by Elsa Oestermarker and Brianna Rohrer.
Ursinus bounced back in singles play winning four of the six matches for a 5-4 victory. Armour earned the win at No. 1 singles defeating Oestermarker 6-3, 6-4. Burke registered a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Sult at the No. 2 spot. Stewart locked up a 6-4, 1-6, 12-10 victory over Serruto at the No. 3 singles and Vassalluzzo closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Louie.
Ursinus vs Marymount (7-2)
The Bears carried the momentum over in their second match of the day winning two of three in their opening doubles matches. The duo of Armour and Stewart locked up an 8-2 victory in No. 1 doubles over Caroline Haymans and Ariane Kombou. Compagnoni and Burke carried the momentum in No. 2 doubles with an 8-0 win over Lorena Gonzalez and Shannon King. Marymount's Francesca Loiseau and Angelica Dalton earned an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles over Vassalluzzo and Maccarelli.
Ursinus continued the great play in singles play as Armour impressed with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over King at No. 1 singles. Stewart was stellar at No. 3 singles defeating Kombou 6-0, 6-0, meanwhile Compagnoni followed up with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles over Dalton. Vassalluzzo (No.6, 6-1, 6-0) and Finnerty (No.5 ; 5-7, 6-2, 10-8) closed out the match with back-to-back victories for the Bears.
The Bears close out their 2022 fall season and will return to action on March 6
th, when they travel to Orlando, Florida for a match against Concordia College (Minn.).
