KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Ursinus College women's tennis team saw its first spring match come down to a third set on the last remaining singles court, but the Bears came up just shy as they were defeated by Concordia (Minnesota) 5-4 in their Florida Spring Break Trip opener on Monday at Oak Street Park.
Playing their first action since October 8th, the Bears saw their record dip to 3-1 overall.
The Cobbers got the early advantage by winning two of the first three doubles matches to gain a 2-1 edge into singles. Sophomores
Allie Armour and
Shannon Stewart dropped an 8-1 decision to Raquel Egge and Mary Skorich at No. 1 doubles while senior
Ava Compagnoni and junior
Claire Burke fell 8-1 to Anna Hacker and Lizzie Allan at the No. 2 spot. Junior
Avery Samer and first-year
Fiona Finnerty gave the Bears some momentum into singles by defeating Emily Savageau and Erin Borchard, 8-6.
Ursinus and Concordia battled in a set of six very competitive singles matches to close out the match, three of which went to tiebreakers. Stewart was dominant at No. 3 singles as she bested Hacker 6-1, 6-1 and Burke bounced back at No. 2 singles to defeat Skorich 6-2, 7-5. Compagnoni was downed by Allan 5-7, 2-6 at the No. 5 spot which set the stage for the match to be decided by the final three matches to be decided by tiebreakers. Finnerty made it 2-0 on the day by winning 2-6, 6-4, (10-4) over Borchard at No. 6 singles. However, Samer was defeated by Savageau 0-6, 7-5, (5-10) at No. 4 singles and Armour dropped a tough 2-6, 7-5, (5-10) battle to Egge at No. 1 singles to give the match to the Cobbers.
The Bears return to action with a pair of matches tomorrow, March 7th as they will take on Misericordia at 11:30 a.m. before facing King's at 6:00 p.m.
