COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Football team capped their regular season with a 38-14 win over Dickinson on Senior Day at Patterson Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Bears improved to 8-2 overall and finish their Centennial Conference slate at 7-2. It was the most Centennial wins in a season for Ursinus since the 2010 season. Meanwhile, the Red Devils fell to 3-7 overall and 3-6 in conference action.
Senior
Jack Psenicska finished the day going 19-of-34 for 239 yards with a pair of touchdown passes and one interception. Psenicska connected with fellow senior
Octavious Carter the most on the afternoon as he finished with a game-high 81 yards on five catches with one score.
Kevin DePrince led the Bears with six catches for 59 yards while catching Psenicska's other touchdown pass.
Sophomore running back
Tony Holden flashed his brilliance once again as he finished with 143 rushing yards on 23 carries and scored two touchdowns. It was Holden's fourth 100-yard game of the regular season after opening the season with three-straight 100-yard games.
The Bears started with the ball and methodically marched 70 yards down the field in 11 plays to take the early 7-0 lead after Psenicska dropped a perfect 33-yard touchdown pass to Carter on 4th and 10. Dickinson looked to respond with its strong ground game and they advanced all the way down to the Bears one-yard line. However, the Ursinus defense stood tall and made a goal line stand which ended with sophomore
Aaron Anderson forcing a fumble on fourth and goal.
A couple of lengthy pass completions led the Bears down the field once more to open the second quarter, but the drive stalled, and kicker
Dakota Wherrity just missed a 37-yard field goal to the right to keep the game at 7-0. Dickinson again had success moving the ball on offense on their ensuing drive and knotted the game at seven with a 25-yard touchdown pass with 8:16 left in the first half. The Bears bounced back with a touchdown of their own on their next drive as Holden scored untouched from eight yards out to make it 14-7 at the 4:53-mark of the second quarter. Ursinus forced its first three-and-out of the game on the Red Devil drive and got great field position at the Dickinson 45-yard line following a short punt. The Bears made quick work of the short field as Psenicska found DePrince wide open on a slant from 13 yards out, extending their lead to 21-7. Ursinus seemed to get one last chance to add to its lead before halftime when senior linebacker
Brett Gross intercepted Dickinson quarterback Rocco DiRico at midfield. The Bears overcame a holding penalty to start the drive before Psenicska was intercepted in the end zone to end the drive.
However, a pair of penalties back the Red Devils up and the Bears used all three of their timeouts in the final minute to force Dickinson to punt with five seconds left just shy of their own end zone. The timeout use paid off as sophomore linebacker
Marc Clayton forced himself into the Dickinson punter's path to block the punt. Senior
Harry Thomas scooped up the ball in midair off the block and raced the short path into the endzone with no time remaining in the first half to put Ursinus up 28-7 at the half in stunning fashion.
After a pair of punts to open the second half, Gross forced a fumble on Red Devils running back Diante Ball to set the Bears up at their own 47-yard line. Ursinus took advantage of the fumble by driving deep into Dickinson's territory and Wherrity bounced back to nail a 30-yard field goal to make it a 31-7 game at the 6:30-mark of the third quarter. The Bears got the ball back after a pair of holding penalties torpedoed the ensuing Red Devil drive, but Holden fumbled deep in their own territory to give Dickinson excellent field position. Dickinson cashed in on 4th and 3 when DiRico found Bryce Peterson from 19 yards out to cut the deficit down to 31-14 with 14:04 left in regulation.
The Red Devils forced a Bears punt and swiftly moved down the field looking to continue to chip into the deficit, making it as far as the Bears 12 yard line. However, sophomore
Anthony Esposito ended the threat by intercepting DiRico in the end zone on 4th and 8. Dickinson then turned the ball over two more times in the fourth quarter off an interception from Anderson in the red zone and a strip sack by senior
Ethan Belville. Holden put the finishing touches on the win by racing 35 yards for his second touchdown of the game, one play after having a 37-yard touchdown called back due to a questionable unnecessary roughness penalty.
Ursinus held a 390-322 total yard advantage in the contest behind a balanced 239 passing yards and 151 rushing yards. The Bears defense forced six Red Devil turnovers which was the most in a single game by an Ursinus defense since getting seven from McDaniel in 2021. Gross paced the Bears with 11 tackles (one solo), one interception, and one forced fumble. Belville and Bodolus spent all day in the Red Devils backfield by combining for five sacks (Belville three, Bodolus two). Belville added a career-high with four tackles for loss and a forced fumble while Bodolus added a forced fumble. Bodolus has a combined eight sacks in the past two seasons against his former team. Senior
Jack Ginley III assisted on four tackles and recovered two fumbles while Anderson tallied an interception, forced fumble, and broke up two passes.
Ball, the leading rusher in the Centennial Conference, totaled 107 yards on 24 carries for Dickinson.
The Bears now await their postseason fate tomorrow after the NCAA Division III Selection Show at 5 p.m. If Johns Hopkins joins Susquehanna as an at-large team in the NCAA Tournament, the Bears will host a Centennial-MAC Bowl Series game for the first time next Saturday, November 19th due to being the top remaining Centennial Conference school not in the NCAA Tournament.
