READING, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's basketball team fell to Albright College 47-36 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
With the loss, the Bears fall to 1-1 on the season, meanwhile the Lions of the MAC Commonwealth improved to 1-1 overall.
Junior
Alison Lisanti led the Bears with 10 points behind shooting 2-of-6 from deep, while guard
Natalie Mehl added eight points, four rebounds, and three assists. Sophomore forward
Chinwe Irondi collected six points and 11 rebounds, while
Kelly Grant chipped in five points.
Albright jumped out to an early 7-0 lead over the first three minutes of action, behind a three-pointer from Mackenzie Dover and four consecutive points from Gabby Boggs. Lisanti answered with a layup at the 7:17 mark, but the Lions responded with a Dover jumper to increase their lead to seven. Grant followed up with a layup midway through the first period to make the score 9-5 Lions. Each defense continued to deny opportunities until converted on a layup to cut the Bears deficit to two with 3:21 to play in the period. Albright closed out the first quarter on a 4-0 run and held a 13-7 lead heading into the second period.
Albright opened the second period with a layup from Boggs, but the Bears quickly answered when Lisanti nailed a mid-range jump shot.
Katie McCusker knocked down a three-pointer at the 6:50 mark of the second period to cut the Bears deficit to three. After an Albright free throw, Grant converted on a jump shot to make the score 16-14 with 4:53 remaining in the half. Albright's Crisanta Apistar knocked down a three-pointer to increase the Lions lead to five on the ensuing possession. Each team was held scoreless over the next three minutes until Mehl converted on three consecutive free throws to make the score 20-17. In the final seconds, Albright's Apistar collected a free throw from the charity stripe to increase the Lions lead to 21-17 heading into halftime.
Each team struggled in the opening minutes of the second half to convert on their offensive opportunities as Albright opened with a 3-0 run before the Bears called a timeout at the 5:08 mark. After the timeout the Lions held a 24-17 advantage, each team went scoreless until a three-pointer from Albright's Amina Rauf at the 3:56 mark of the third quarter. The Lions closed out the third quarter on a 10-2 run to push their lead to 18 through three quarters.
The Bears opened the fourth quarter with a mid-range jump shot from
Maria D'Aulerio to make the score 37-21 Lions. Albright's Amy Jones answered with a jumper at the 7:29 mark of the period but the Bears responded with a 5-0 run to cut their deficit to 13 with 5:55 to play in the game. Ironid converted on a layup and after a steal Lisanti collected her second three-pointer during the Bears run. Each team traded baskets until a
Margrett Brown three-pointer with 3:25 to play cut the Bears deficit to ten. Albright closed out the contest on a 6-5 run to earn the 47-36 victory on their home court.
Dover and Boggs led the Lions with 12 points each while combining for 19 rebounds. Apistar finished with a team-high three assists and added six points. The Bears were held to just 21.9% (14-64) from the field and 17.4% (4-23) from three-point range, while the Lions shot 37% (17-46) from the field and 38.5% (5-13) from deep. Ursinus held a 18-4 advantage in offensive rebounds, but the Lions forced 18 turnovers and created 13 opportunities from the charity stripe.
The Bears will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Reading for a non-conference matchup with Alvernia University at 7pm.
