COLLEGEVILLE, PA. – The Ursinus Men's Soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback to Gettysburg in their Centennial Conference home opener on Saturday afternoon from Patterson Field.
With the loss, the Bears fell to 1-3-1 overall while starting Centennial action 0-1. Meanwhile, the Bullets improved to 4-0-1 and will start Centennial play 1-0.
Gettysburg earned the first opportunity of the contest as a header from Aidan Muller in the 2
nd minute was sent over the net. The Bullets followed with a great look in front of the net in the 15
th minute. Gettysburg's Athi Msiza created space between his defender, but his low bouncing shot was saved by junior goalkeeper
Kirk Ransome.
Ransome, making his first start on the season, earned five saves in the first half as the Bullets held a 10-0 advantage in shots. Each team finished with two corner kicks opportunities in the first half, as Gettysburg held control of the pace of play early in the match.
Gettysburg's Jack Carroll scored the opening goal of the contest in the 61
st minute, after dribbling through the Bears defense a low shot snuck past Ransome and the defense.
In the 70
th minute, the tension raised between both teams as Alex Woll and Nikko Disimplico each were handed out yellow cards. Just under a minute later, first-year
AJ Torres and Gettysburg's Fritz Reiter joined the club earning cards in the 72
nd minute.
Sophomore Alex Woll was issued his second yellow card in the 78
th minute after a tackle inside the box left the Bullets with a penalty kick opportunity. The Bullets capitalized on the foul called as Chase Sempervive put the visitors ahead 2-0 with a sharp low kick to the right side of the net. Being a man down, the Bears were unable to make a comeback over the final twelve minutes, falling 2-0.
The Bullets finished with a 16-4 advantage in shots while each team finished with three corner kick opportunities. Gettysburg's Kevin Muhic earned the win in net for the Bullets collecting two saves while Ransome faced six shots in the second half, finishing his night with five saves.
The Bears will return to action on Wednesday, September 21
st as they will travel to King's College for a non-conference matchup starting at 7pm.
