COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The No. 20 Ursinus Field Hockey team used a two-goal third quarter to knock off No. 16 TCNJ on Wednesday night at Snell Alumnae Field in non-conference action.
With the win, the Bears evened their record at 3-3 behind their second-straight win. Meanwhile, the Lions fell to 3-3 overall.
Ursinus set the tone just 30 seconds into the contest as senior
Jordan Moore rifled a shot from a penalty corner opportunity to put the Bears up 1-0. Senior
Laura Rothschild inserted the ball to junior
Sarah Symes to set up Moore for her swing. The Bears continued to press early as sophomore
Mary Lauren Franz had a shot saved a minute later before senior
Lauren Weaver pushed a shot just wide from a penalty corner opportunity. TCNJ began to push back minutes later and tied the game at 1 in the fifth minute of action after crashing the net during a penalty corner sequence. Ursinus goalkeeper
Jordan Ulsh kept the game tied with back-back-back point-blank saves in the seventh minute. The Bears drew three corners in the final seven seconds of the quarter but were unable to convert.
After the Bears had a pair of shots turned away early in the second quarter, Rothschild came up big for Ursinus by swatting away a ball from the net that beat Ulsh in the 19th minute. Ulsh continued to stand tall for Ursinus after making a save in the 23rd minute while the Bears staved off back-to-back penalty corner attempts.
Much like the start of the first half, the Bears started fast to open the third quarter as Rothschild put the Bears in front during the 32nd minute with a putback following an initial shot from Moore off a penalty corner. Ursinus controlled play throughout the second half as they held the Lions without a shot during the third quarter. Franz extended the Bears advantage in the 41st minute with a goal after lifting the ball over the Lions goalkeeper while falling from the right side. TCNJ cut the deficit to one just a minute into the fourth quarter after a scramble in front of the net, but that would be the only shot attempt they had in the fourth quarter. The Bears maintained possession and locked down any potential Lions opportunity to preserve the win.
The Bears held a 17-14 shot advantage for the game after holding a 5-1 edge in the second half. TCNJ held an 11-10 edge in shots on goal while each team earned nine penalty corners. Ulsh made eight saves to earn the win while Lions goalkeeper Dani Britton suffered the loss after making seven saves.
Ursinus returns to action on Saturday, September 24th as they will open Centennial Conference play on the road at Franklin & Marshall for a 12 p.m. start.
