CARLISLE, Pa. – The Ursinus men's soccer team was downed 1-0 by Dickinson on Saturday evening in Centennial Conference action after the Red Devils scored in the final minutes.
With the loss, the Bears fall to 1-4-2 overall and 0-2 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Red Devils improved to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
"Falling short after putting in a good performance is tough," Head Coach
Daniel Clitnovici said. "The boys played well and deserved something more from tonight's game, credit to Dickinson because they hung on and found a way to get the win. We have had a challenging season so far with players coming and going with injuries, illnesses, and other things so for us to perform well tonight was important. We still have a way to go but we took some good steps forward tonight. I'm proud of the boys and I feel for them. They deserved more from the game tonight,".
Dickinson controlled play in the early minutes as they had a pair of decent scoring chances in the first 20 minutes. Bears junior goalkeeper
Kirk Ransome made a sharp save in the fifth minute of play before surviving a shot off the crossbar in the 21st minute. Ursinus had their first best looks on the net in the 29th minute when sophomore
Tommy Mollis had a shot saved on net before freshman Collin Deal sent a ball just high of the net. Ursinus continued to press in the final minutes of the first half as senior
Marco Grenda had a shot saved on net in the 42nd minute.
Following a couple of shots that went wide of the net, the Red Devils tested Ransome again in the 70th minute but the Bears keeper was up to the task to keep the game scoreless. Ransome then deflected a header away from a free kick in the 86th minute before deflecting a second onto top of the net after a corner kick. Unfortunately for the Bears, a second header from another corner kick was converted to put the Red Devils on top with 3:21 left in regulation. Ursinus was unable to get a shot on net in the final three minutes of play.
The Red Devils held a 12-8 overall shot advantage and 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Dickinson also held an 8-4 edge in corner kicks as well. Ransome made five saves in the loss while Red Devils goalkeeper Andrew Kempe made three saves to earn the win.
The Bears return to action on Wednesday, September 28th as they will travel to face Swarthmore at 4 p.m. in Centennial Conference play.
