GENEVA, N.Y. – The No. 13 Ursinus Field Hockey team was unable to overcome a three-goal fourth quarter from William Smith as they fell 4-1 to the Herrons on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.
With the loss, the Bears drop to 0-2 overall after the first weekend of the season. Meanwhile, the Herrons of the Liberty League improved to 2-0 and avenged a 4-0 defeat to the Bears last season.
Ursinus nearly broke onto the scoreboard just over a minute into the game when sophomore
Maeve Montgomery beat the Herron goalkeeper, but had the ball knocked away by a defender. Bruggeman had a decent chance saved 5:04 into the first quarter before Montgomery had a shot go wide off a penalty corner opportunity. The Herrons took a 1-0 lead on their first and only shot five minutes into the second quarter from a blast just in front of the cage. Ursinus did not see a shot go on goal for the duration of the second quarter.
The Bears had a pair of shots go wide from penalty corner opportunities in the third quarter before sophomore
Mary Lauren Franz had a blast blocked with just over four minutes left in the quarter. Ursinus had four penalty corners in the third quarter and did not find a shot on net during that span. William Smith gained a penalty corner of their own in the first minute of the fourth quarter and ended up eventually capitalizing with the possession to take a 2-0 lead. The tally opened the floodgates for the Herrons as they added two more goals in a span of 2:31 to take a commanding 4-0 advantage. Needing something to spark a rally, the Bears drew back-to-back penalty corners in the 53rd minute of the game and junior
Jordan Moore broke the shutout on the second corner to make it 4-1. Rothschild found sophomore
Bridget Wappman who flipped it over to Moore for a one-timer in the circle. The Bears had one more shot register on goal but was turned away by the Herrons goalkeeper.
Ursinus held a 13-11 shot advantage for the game, but the Herrons saw nine shots go on goal compared to the Bears five. The Bears also held a sizable advantage in penalty corners at 10-3. Bears senior goalkeeper
Jordan Ulsh suffered the loss after making five saves in the full 60 minutes. Herrons goalkeeper Brittany Foster earned the win after making three saves during the full contest.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, September 10th as they will host Lynchburg in non-conference action at 1 p.m.
