Men's Basketball Suffers Setback at No. 11 Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Ursinus men's basketball team dropped a 67-51 contest to No. 11 Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.
 
 
Senior Ryan Hughes paced the Bears with a game-high 18 points while classmate Kyle Maurer posted 11 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Cole Grubbs nearly missed a double-double with 10 rebounds and eight points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field.
 
 
The Bears battled the Blue Jays early with each team trading points to leave the score deadlocked at six at the 17:39-mark of the first half. Hopkins used a 9-2 run to go up 15-8 at the 10:44-mark of the first half before the Bears used back-to-back field goals to get within three points at 15-12. Leading 17-14, the Blue Jays took their largest lead of the half at 28-16 with 1:28 left in the first half behind an 11-2 run that saw the Bears go 5:29 without scoring a point. Ursinus drew within seven points at 28-21 with 18 seconds left in the half, but the Blue Jays drew a foul in the final second to extend their lead to 30-21 after making two free throws.  The Bears were unable to get their rhythm going on offense in the second half which allowed the Blue Jays to pull away.
 
 
Ursinus shot 35.5 percent (22-of-62) from the field and just 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from three-point range. The Bears went 3-of-4 (75%) from the free throw line and forced 13 Hopkins turnovers. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays went 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field and 44 percent (11-of-25) from three-point range. Hopkins went 6-of-9 (66.7%) from the free throw line and held a 44-32 edge in rebounds.
 
 
Carson James led the Blue Jays with 16 points behind going 4-of-7 from three-point range and Sidney Thybulle completed a double-double with 10 points plus 10 rebounds while adding three blocks.
 
 
The Bears return to action on Wednesday, January 18th as they will take on their second-straight nationally opponent on the road in No. 12 Swarthmore at 7:30 p.m.
