Women's Hoops Drops CC Battle against Gettysburg

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Women's basketball team suffered a 52-37 setback to Gettysburg on Tuesday night at Helfferich Hall in Centennial Conference action.

 
 
Sophomore Chinwe Irondi recorded her eighth double-double of the season behind scoring 16 points (13 in the first half) and 11 rebounds. First-year Madison Smith tallied a season-high 11 points behind going 4-of-7 from the field and grabbed five rebounds.
 
 
Irondi dominated for the Bears in the first quarter as she scored nine of the teams 12 points in the first quarter behind going 4-of-4 from the field. Ursinus took their first lead of the game at the 8:13-mark of the first quarter following a three-point play from Irondi. The Bears battled the Bullets back and forth throughout the first quarter and did not trail by more than three points. After the teams combined for seven points in the first 2:03 of the second quarter, the scoring went cold as a point was not scored for a span of 5:29. Irondi snapped a 6:26 scoreless drought for the Bears with 1:26 before halftime to cut the Bullets lead down to 21-16. Gettysburg got its offense going again in the final minute and scored a pair of field goals to take a 25-18 lead into halftime.
 


Unfortunately for the Bears, the Bullets pulled away in the third quarter behind an 11-4 run to open the second half and shooting 57.1 percent from the field in the quarter. Gettysburg opened the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run to stretch their lead to 16 with 5:53 to play. Junior Natalie Mehl answered with back-to-back three pointers to cut the Bears deficit to 15 midways through the quarter. Over the final minutes neither could create offensive opportunities resulting in the 52-37 victory for the Bullets.
 


The Bears shot 32.6 percent from the field (15-of-46) and just 20 percent (2-of-10) from three-point range. Ursinus went 5-of-7 (71.4%) from the free throw line and held a slight 33-30 rebounding advantage. Meanwhile, the Bullets shot just 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the field and just 18.2 percent (2-of-11). Gettysburg went a near perfect 8-of-9 (88.9%) from the free throw line and forced 24 Bears turnovers.
 


Mackenzie Szlosek led the Bullets with a game-high 18 points and grabbed four rebounds and two steals while Alayna Arnolie added 13 points and seven rebounds.
 


Ursinus returns to action on Thursday, January 26th as they will travel to against Franklin & Marshall at 6:00 p.m.
