Field Hockey Edged 2-1 in Overtime by Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The No. 18 Ursinus Field Hockey team suffered its second straight overtime loss as they dropped a 2-1 road contest to Gettysburg on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference play.

The first quarter featured midfield and possession battle and first-year Marie Brainard had the best chance of either team when she had a shot on net saved in the 12th minute. Ursinus generated sustained pressure to start the second quarter and received four penalty corners but ultimately could not get on the board. However, Gettysburg had two corners within 19 seconds of each other in the 25th minute and cashed in on the second with a rebound goal to go up 1-0.

Brainard leveled the score at one just 1:43 into the second half with a sharp shot from the middle of the circle. Gettysburg had a chance later in the third quarter but had a shot saved from a quarter in the 35th minute. Ursinus controlled play for most of the fourth quarter but could not find the go-ahead goal they needed. They generated seven penalty corners in the fourth and five shots with three being blocked from chances off corners. Gettysburg scored the winning goal just 1:50 into the first overtime period after a shot from a corner ricocheted into the net.

The Bears held a 12-10 advantage in shots, but each team had six shots on net. Ursinus held a sizable 14-5 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Adriana Palladinetti made four saves during the contest while Gettysburg goalkeeper Emilia Saccento made five in the 61:50 of action.

The Bears return to action on Wednesday, October 18th as they will travel to face Haverford at 7:00 p.m.
